Prince George’s title could change FIVE times over lifetime – royal rules explained

PRINCE GEORGE is the eldest child of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William. And while he is currently known as Prince George of Cambridge, there are five occasions where George may see his royal title change in the future.

Prince George was born in 2013, and before his birth the Queen made amendments to the rules surrounding royal titles. Subsequently, all of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge’s children have been granted the title of Prince or Princess. Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were born in 2015 and 2018 respectively.

But if Prince William’s title changes in the future, this will likely be reflected in his children’s titles too.

When Prince Charles becomes King, Prince William will likely become Prince of Wales as the eldest son of the monarch.

If this is the case, George will likely become known as Prince George of Wales.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry were known in this style before they married, as their father Charles is the current Prince of Wales.

But as George is currently third in line to the throne, his title will likely change on three further occasions in his life.

If George decides to get married, he will probably receive a Dukedom from the monarch at the time.

This has traditionally been the case when members of the Royal Family get married.

Prince William was created Duke of Cambridge when he married Kate Middleton in 2011.

While Prince Harry was given the Dukedom of Sussex when he married Meghan Markle in 2018 .

But George’s royal title could be subject to yet another change when his father William is King.

As Prince George will be heir apparent when William is King, he will automatically become the Duke of Cornwall when his father is King.

This could remain his only title as heir apparent.

But George could also be given the Prince of Wales title by his father, a title reserved for the heir to the throne.

In this case, George would officially be titled as George, Prince of Wales.

Prince George’s final title change will take place when he is King.

The Queen’s father King George VI was actually born as Prince Albert, but he chose to rule under a different name as King.

Prince George’s full name is George Alexander Louis, so he may opt to rule as King Alexander or King Louis.

Or he may simply wish to be known as King George VII.
