Charles said: “My father for I suppose the last 70 years has given the most remarkable, devoted service to the Queen, to my family and to the country and also to the whole of the Commonwealth.
“And, as you can imagine, my family and I miss my father enormously.
“He was a much loved and appreciated figure and apart from anything else I can imagine he’d be so deeply touched by the number of other people here and elsewhere around the world in the Commonwealth who also I think share our loss and our sorrow.
“And my dear Papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things being said about him.
Prince Charles has issued a statement on his late father
Prince Charles praised his father’s dedication to the monarchy
“And from that point of view, we are – my family – deeply grateful for all that.
“It will sustain us in this particular loss and at this particularly sad time.”
Charles appeared composed as he delivered the short speech, donning a shirt, tie and blue suit.
Earlier today the Earl and Countess of Wessex were filmed driving from Windsor Castle, with Sophie appearing to be close to tears.
Sitting in the passenger’s seat with the window rolled down, she told one of the well-wishers gathered outside that “the Queen has been amazing”.
Prince Charles said Prince Philip would be touched by the heartwarming things being said about him
Prince Edward and his wife spent about an hour at the castle this morning before departing.
His public tribute to his father came as the details of Philip’s funeral were announced.
Buckingham Palace said that Philip’s ceremonial royal funeral will take place next Saturday, April 17, in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
A national minute’s silence will be observed as it begins at 3pm.
The royal funeral will be like no other, with the Queen and her family following guidelines and wearing face masks and socially distancing as they gather to say their final farewell.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s coffin will be transported from Windsor Castle, where he died on Friday morning, to the chapel in a specially modified Land Rover he helped to design.
Charles will walk behind the vehicle flanked by other senior royals.
Prince Harry will fly in from California to attend the funeral, the palace said.
It is not known if he will take part in the official procession behind his grandfather’s casket.
Meghan, who is pregnant with their second child, will not attend on doctor’s advice, the palace said.
A palace spokesman said: “The Duke of Sussex is planning to attend. The Duchess of Sussex has been advised by her physician not to travel. So the Duke will be attending.”
Buckingham Palace stressed the service would be held in line with Government coronavirus guidelines, meaning members of the royal family including the Queen would be expected to wear a mask.
Under the current rules no more than 30 people are permitted to gather at a funeral.
Originally 800 people would have been due to gather to pay their respects to the nation’s longest serving consort, but Philip is known to have wanted a low key affair.
All public elements of the funeral have been cancelled, it will be televised but take place entirely in the grounds of the castle, the palace said.
A senior royal official said the monarch, 94, has decided the Royal Family will enter two weeks of mourning, and engagements will continue appropriate to the circumstances.
