Prince Charles in ‘RACISM ROW’ after being named next head of the Commonwealth

Prince Charles has been caught up in a racism row after a non-white woman declared she was left feeling shocked and humiliated following claims he joked about whether she was really from Manchester.

Journalist Anita Sethi said that the Prince of Wales asked her where she was from when they met briefly during the Commonwealth People’s Forum earlier this week in London, where she was a guest speaker.

When she replied “Manchester, UK” she said the heir to the throne responded with “well, you don’t look like it!” and then laughed.

She has now questioned whether the royal should be the next head of the Commonwealth after it was announced today that he will succeed his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

She said: “This is exactly why some people, including the prince, urgently need a history lesson about immigration, the British Empire, the Commonwealth and colonialism.

“Because I do look like I’m from Manchester, actually – a city in which many people of colour have been born and bred.

“Growing up in Manchester, and going to school in Rusholme, a multicultural area in that city, I remember being taught nothing in history lessons about the Commonwealth.

“If such vital knowledge was more ingrained there would not be so much racism and ignorance.”

The writer also blasted the royal as a “mooted next leader” in a piece written for The Guardian.

She went on: “The mooted next leader of an organisation that represents one-third of the people on the planet commented that I, a brown woman, did not look as if I was from a city in the UK is shocking.”

She added: “Whatever the prince meant or didn’t mean in our fleeting encounter, since it happened I have been through all the feelings – from shock to humiliation to rage.

“Most of all, I feel angry that there could be such casual ignorance in the corridors of power, an ignorance that also permeates society – not least because some British people of colour invited here have been threatened with deportation.

“They don’t look like they are from here, according to some.”

The heir to the throne was given the backing of the 53 nation body as they met behind closed doors to discuss the move yesterday.

The Queen has filled the role since 1952 – but the position is not hereditary.

There had been suggestions the position should rotate around member states as it would be more “democratic”.

Jeremy Corbyn said he thought Prince Charles should not automatically become the head of the Commonwealth.

Speaking on BBC’s Andrew Marr Show he said: “I think the Commonwealth ought to really get a chance to decide who its own head is in the future.

“The Queen clearly is personally very committed to the Commonwealth but after her I think maybe it’s a time to say well actually the Commonwealth should decide who its own president is on a rotational basis.”
