Prince Charles ‘frightened away’ best candidates for marriage before meeting Diana

PRINCE CHARLES “frightened away the best candidates for marriage” before he settled down with Princess Diana, according to a royal biography.

Mr Hodgson explained: “In London, his devil-may-care attitude to girls around town combined with his Action Man image not only made him all the more attractive, it totally disguised his inner turmoil.”

The biographer claimed Charles struggled with his confidence in private, and the pressure of one day taking over the throne sometimes overcame him.

He continued: “Beautiful and eligible young women — including, among others, Davina Sheffield, Sabrina Gunness, Lady Jane Wellesley, Anna Wallace, Lady Cecily Kerr and Lady Sarah Spencer — were paraded on his arm.”

Headlines were often dedicated to speculation over whom the heir to the throne was dating too, especially as she could have become the future Queen consort.

Mr Hodgson noted: “Flattered by the attention of so many gorgeous women and capable of using his greater freedom to enjoy them, he was determined not only to sow his wild oats, as commanded by Mountbatten, but to do so with gusto in an act of defiance against his harsh upbringing and as a distraction from his inner insecurity.

“He was literally spoiled for choice and his closest friends began to worry about how he was getting through all the best candidates for marriage at an alarming rate — often discarding them on a whim without really giving them a chance.

“This had the effect of frightening the more suitable type of girl away while attracting the wrong ones all the more.”

Lord Mountbatten tried to set Charles up with his granddaughter, Amanda Knatchbull, in 1974 but she rejected his marriage proposal out of fear of joining the Royal Family and living in the spotlight.

Charles also considered asking Camilla to be his wife when they were dating, but when he was called away on military service, she decided to wed her ex-boyfriend Andrew Parker Bowles — leaving the Prince of Wales completely heartbroken.

It was not until he turned 31 that he started to consider Lady Diana Spencer in a romantic setting.

He first met her when she was 16 while he was dating her older sister Sarah, but their relationship began to change when they bumped into each other again at a friend’s barbecue several years later.

Charles’ biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby, later claimed: “Without any apparent surge in feeling, he began to think seriously of her as a potential bride.”

By the following February, Charles had proposed and they married in July 1981.

However, the heir has been widely criticised for choosing Diana, then just 19, to be his bride and bringing her into the royal fold.

Mr Hodgson claimed “she couldn’t have been marrying into a worse situation”, as she was thrust onto the global stage overnight and put on the frontline of one of the most famous families in the world.

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith also told NBC News: “They were a misalliance. They were only together a dozen times before they were engaged.”

The couple’s messy split and subsequent divorce played out in public throughout the Nineties.

‘Charles: The Man Who Will Be King’ by Howard Hodgson was published by John Blake in 2007 and is available here.
