Prince Charles and Camilla hail ‘remarkable’ Battle of Britain victory in touching service

PRINCE CHARLES joined the Prime Minister and others yesterday to commemorate the 81st-anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Prince Charles, 72, and his wife Camilla Parker-Bowles, 74, attended the service at Westminster Abbey on Sunday, to commemorate the “brave men” involved in the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain in 1940 saw RAF pilots take to the skies across southern England to fend off the Nazi’s Luftwaffe.

Berlin sent some 1,120 Luftwaffe aircraft to attack the UK.

While vastly outnumbered, around 630 brave RAF fighters managed to repel the Nazi pilots from the capital.

Just two days later, Adolf Hitler was forced to postpone German plans to launch a seaborne invasion of the UK – known at the time as Operation Sea Lion.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were also accompanied by the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Snaps taken from yesterday’s service also show how COVID-19 has changed how we commemorate our RAF heroes and wartime successes.

Visitors, including Boris Johnson, can be seen donning face-masks as they entered the 1061-year-old church and guests were required to follow social distancing rules.

Charles and Camilla posted their masked visit to Westminster Abbey on the Clarence House Instagram page.

Accompanying their post, Clarence House wrote: “Today The Prince of Wales, Patron of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association, and The Duchess of Cornwall attended a service of Thanksgiving and Rededication at Westminster Abbey to commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.”

Fans were quick to show support for the RAF’s heroics in 1940 with over 40,000 people liking the post.

But many Instagram users decided to share their thoughts in the comments.

@rbaker8600 said: “The sacrifices made by these brave men are just unimaginable.

Others users opted to compliment the Duchess of Cornwall on her attire at the service.

“Love the Duchess’s outfit,” said @dkingman50.

@redlipstickwarrior added: “The Duchess looks so elegant and lovely.”
