Meghan Markle’s ‘friend’ accuses Palace of double standards in angry twitter rant

MEGHAN MARKLE and Prince Harry’s biographer Omid Scobie has hit out at critics of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after they opened up with a US journalist about private conversations with senior royals.

He wrote on Twitter: “Bit confused here, so just want to get this new royal protocol correct.

“It’s okay when info is leaked to the papers via a palace source but not when Gayle King shares it on TV? Righty-ho then”.

Mr Scobie’s tweet was welcomed by many fans of the Sussexes, who accused royal sources of leaking stories to the press.

One wrote on Twitter: “Faceless and nameless sources OR sources with names and faces. Which one is better?”

Another said: “The palace already leaked it to their friends in the media. Harry just confirmed.”

And a third attacked the whole institution of monarchy, saying: “This is the first time that someone is able to fight back and they just don’t know what to do, since the world is not buying their bulls**t.

“An institution that pretty much absolutely has no function in today’s society and it is just a matter of time before it gets abolished.”

Other social media users, however, did not agree with Mr Scobie.

One, saying Ms King offered too much private information, wrote: “For me the difference is answering a yes or no question (did they speak? Yes, says a senior palace official) versus gossiping (it was unproductive, they aren’t speaking to Meghan only Harry, etc say Meghan and Harry to her broadcaster friends).

Another said: “This is a family business that you and Gayle are meddling into.

“Keyword – family business. Your surname is not Mountbatten-Windsor.”

And another, referring to the Queen’s statement issued two days after the interview of the Sussexes with Oprah aired in the US, said: “In this ‘Royal Communications’, I see the words ‘…will be addressed by the family privately.’ It’s easy to understand.”

Yesterday, Ms King appeared on the breakfast news show CBS This Morning to report Prince Harry had spoken to both Prince Charles and Prince William.

However, she added, their discussions were “unproductive”.

She said: “Well I’m not trying to break news, but I did actually call them to see how they were feeling, and it’s true, Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too.

“The word I was given, those conversations were not productive. But they are glad they at least started a conversation.”

Ms King went on speaking about the media coverage about Meghan, saying: “And I think what is still upsetting to them is the palace keep saying they want to work it out privately, but yet, they believe these false stories are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan, still.

“one in the Royal family has talked to Meghan yet, at this particular time.

“And I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the Royals to intervene and tell the press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant.

“And until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward.”

The Sussexes’ decision to open up on Harry’s private discussions with Charles and William was criticised by many commentators.

talkRADIO host mike Graham wrote on Twitter: “Another shocking betrayal of private conversations from Harry and Meghan.”

The Daily Mail’s Saturday Diary editor Richard Eden said: “This is extraordinary. Are we going to have a running commentary for years to come from Harry and Meghan’s friends on their relations with the Royal Family? If so, the Royals will be wary of speaking to them.”

And the Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter said: “Seems like the narrative is being driven by Gayle King of CBS. I don’t think a continual play on American TV is quite what The Queen had in mind. Time for a cooling off period – best for everyone to put up and shut up.”

A senior royal source said in the wake of Ms King’s appearance on TV: “None of the households – the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – will be giving a running commentary on private conversations”.

Ms King hasn’t been the first journalist to report Harry had spoken to his brother.

Over the weekend, The Sunday Times’ royal reporter Roya Nikkhah wrote it had emerged the brothers had “been in contact” for the first time since the Oprah interview.
