Meghan Markle shock claim: Half-brother says Harry’s fiancee ‘DENIED knowing her family’
MEGHAN Markle denied knowing her half-brother following the announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry, her family has claimed in a scathing attack on the bride-to-be.
Tom Markle Jr claims he reached out to the former actress for help after her engagement to Harry brought unwanted media attention, but was met with a “harsh” response from his half-sister which he said was “slap in the face”.
Tom, one of two children Tom Markle Snr had before he met Meghan’s mother Doria, admitted he and Meghan lost contact several years ago when she moved to Toronto, Canada, in 2011 for her role in the TV series Suits.
However, he insists he “spent a lot of time with her growing up” and following the announcement of her engagement to Harry, sent a touching letter of congratulations.
Tom, who was 15 years old when Meghan was born, said: “We were as close as we could be, as tight as we could be, that’s what we were.”
But Meghan’s half-brother claims she never responded and later when he attempted to contact the future royal through her lawyer he said Prince Harry’s fiancee denied she knew him.
He said: “My lawyer had a phone meeting with her lawyer, and he emailed me some of her direct words. She said, ‘That’s distant family and I don’t know those people’. That’s pretty harsh.”
Tom also hit back at claims he did not know Meghan as “ridiculous”.
A Kensington Palace spokeswoman told Express they would not comment on Tom’s claims.
Last year Meghan’s father was reportedly left “extremely hurt” by Prince Harry’s suggestion that his fiancee had found “the family she never had” while with the royals at Christmas.
Speaking on Radio 4, Prince Harry said the Royal Family loved having her at the Queen’s Norfolk estate and that the 36-year-old had a “fantastic” time before adding: “It’s the family I suppose that she’s never had.”
However Tom Markle Jr suggested his recent brushes with the law may have embarrassed his half-sister and forced the future royal to distance herself from him.
The 51-year-old was jailed for two days for a drunken brawl with his fiancée Darlene Blount on New Year’s Eve and he was also arrested last year for brandishing a gun at his partner, although the charges were later dropped.
He blamed his behaviour on struggling to cope with the extra pressure and scrutiny he and the rest of his family have faced since Meghan’s royal engagement and said he apologised to the future royal if his actions had “caused you any embarrassment”.
Last month he said: “It hasn’t been easy. Meghan’s relationship with Prince Harry has shone a spotlight on our family. It doesn’t help when you have issues and your sister is engaged to royalty. It adds a whole new level of scrutiny.
“We’ve been under a lot of stress because of all the attention. At some point you find yourself drinking too much to escape the pressure.”
And Tom claims he wanted the royal palace to help him seek retractions for stories he felt were defamatory and damaging.
Meghan’s half-siblings have been quite outspoken since her engagement to Prince Harry was announced last November.
In another scathing attack, her half-sister Samantha claimed Meghan needed to “step up to the plate” and help her bankrupt father.
The estranged half-sister said the future royal “owes” her father for helping Meghan launch her successful acting career.
Samantha said: “I think he did help her a lot and he is very creative too and encouraging, so she made the most of her environment.
“I don’t think he feels that she owes him, but that is how I see it.”
And in an apparent swipe to Meghan’s attire in the royal couple’s official engagement photos, the 53-year-old added: “If you can afford $75,000 (£53,535) for a dress, you can afford $75,000 to help your dad. That’s how I feel, what’s who I am.”
A Kensington Palace spokeswoman told Express they would not comment on Samantha’s remarks.
