Meghan Markle set for Christmas with Queen at Sandringham after engagement to Prince Harry
Meghan Markle is expected to spend Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham following her engagement to Prince Harry.
The 36-year-old Suits star will be invited to the Royal festivities for the first time after missing out last year.
Allowing her to join the family previously would have been a breach of protocol, Royal insiders say, with invites reserved for close family only.
A source told magazine Closer this week that Meghan would be given support by the Duchess of Cambridge for her first Christmas with the family.
She said: “Kate was a bag of nerves the first time she did Christmas with the Royals, so she knows exactly how daunting it must be for Meghan.”
Every year, the Queen is joined for a family celebration at her 20,000 acre Norfolk estate.
Last year, William and Kate missed some of the gathering to spend time with the Duchess’ parents in Berkshire.
Traditionally, all the Queen’s grandchildren and great grandchildren help finish decorating the tree on Christmas Eve.
Gifts, which are usually tongue-in-cheek, will be opened later that day after being laid out in the Red Drawing Room.
That is followed by a formal candlelit dinner where ladies where gowns and jewellery while the men are dressed in black tie.
On Christmas morning, everyone dines on a full English before heading out to a church service at St Mary Magdalene.
Following a slap-up roast dinner, the family gather again to watch the Queen’s speech.
After months of rumours, Meghan and Harry’s engagement was announced today, just weeks before the festivities.
The much-anticipated news was confirmed by the Prince of Wales in a brief statement issued by Clarence House.
It read: “His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle.
“The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
“His Royal Highness and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month.”
Meghan’s parents Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, who could also get a Christmas invite, said they wished the couple “a lifetime of happiness”.
They said: “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person.
“To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.
“We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, also issued a statement saying: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan.
“It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
Today’s announcement means that Meghan is to become the Duchess of Sussex.
The happy couple will also take part in a broadcast interview to be aired on TV screens this evening to mark the start of their very public life together.
After marrying next spring, they will I’ve together at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
