Princess Diana’s fashion legacy has reportedly influenced her two daughters-in-law, according to fashion and royal expert Rachel Birchfield. On several occasions, Kate and Meghan Markle have worn jewellery that belonged to the late Princess of Wales, and have dressed in similar attire as a touching gesture to the renowned fashion icon.
Speaking to the podcast Royally Us, Rachel Birchfield said: “It absolutely does, we see both Kate and Meghan doing nods and tributes to Diana’s style all the time.
“From Meghan’s Cartier bracelet that she wears so much publicly, to how Kate dressed for when she debuted her children, George, Charlotte and Louis, on the steps of the Lindo Wing.
“They are constantly doing nods to her fashion that they put their own twists on.
“I mean, Diana is a fashion icon and her looks will always be a part of the conversation I think.”
During her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Meghan Markle wore Princess Diana’s famous Cartier bracelet around her wrist. The beautiful crystal bracelet had been worn by Diana several times during the 1990s.
Two diamonds from the bracelet were used by Prince Harry when designing the engagement ring he gave to Meghan.
Prince Harry proposed with a personally crafted three diamond ring, using two from his mother’s collection and another diamond from Botswana, where he and Meghan took their first vacation together.
In an interview to mark their engagement, Meghan said: “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness is – and the inclusion of that and obviously not being able to meet his mum it’s so important to me to – to know that she’s a part of this with us.”
Meghan also included forget-me-nots and white roses from Princess Diana’s memory garden, in her wedding bouquet.
In similar touching tributes, the Duchess of Sussex wore her late mother-in-law’s aquamarine cocktail ring for the evening reception of her wedding to Prince Harry.
Meanwhile, Prince William proposed to his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton with the 12-carat sapphire engagement ring that was given to his mother by Prince Charles.
The Duchess of Cambridge also turned a pair of Diana’s stud earrings into a pair of elegant drop-down sapphire earrings, which she has worn on several occasions.
After giving birth to Prince George in 2013, several royal fans spotted the similarities in the polka-dot dress Kate wore to the one Princess Diana wore when she appeared on the steps of the Lindo Wing with Prince William in 1982.
At the time of her death on 31 August, 1997, Princess Diana was considered a global fashion icon and was the most photographed woman in the world.
She died in a car accident in Paris, after her vehicle lost control in a tunnel whilst being chased by the paparazzi.
Her sudden death at the age of 36 sparked unprecedented mourning, with over a million bouquets of flowers laid outside her home in Kensington Palace and an estimated 2.5 billion people watching her televised funeral.
