The Sussexes’ Netflix documentary trailer comes as the Prince and Princess of Wales are visiting the US on a royal tour.

The trailer opens with one of the show’s producers asking: “Why do you want to make this documentary?”

Black and white photos then flash across the scene, with one showing the Duchess with her head in her hands.

The Duchess is seen wiping her eyes as she appears to cry.

Harry says “No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors… I had to do everything I could to protect my family”, while Meghan says, “When the stakes were this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”

The timing of the trailer’s release, coming a day before William and Kate are due to meet with US President Joe Biden to award the Earthshot prize, has not be lost on royal experts.

Royal editor for the Sunday Times Roya Nikkhah wrote on Twitter: “If the trailer is anything to go by, it is going to be quite a watch.”

While ITV News royal editor Chris Ship added: “With Harry’s brother and sister-in-law in the USA today and tomorrow and Prince William’s Earthshot Prize in Boston on Friday night, some might reasonably ask: ‘couldn’t they have waited a couple of days?’”

Elsewhere royal contributor Robert Jobson wrote: “Harry & Meghan drop bombshell Netflix docu TV trailer saying ‘no one sees what’s happening behind closed doors’ just as William & Catherine face 2nd day of US visit after Palace race row. Prince and Princess are expected to meet POTUS on Friday ahead of #EarthshotBoston2022 and now comes the Netflix Harry and Meghan Docu trailer … Timing is everything.”

The preview for the fly-on-the-wall series comes one day after the Prince and Princess of Wales got off to a difficult start on their US tour where they were booed by Boston Celtics fans at a basketball game.

Their appearance coincided with a scandal as Lady Susan Hussey faced allegations of racism relating to an event with Queen Consort Camilla at Buckingham Palace.

Domestic violence charity worker Ngozi Fulani accused the former lady-in-waiting, who has since been sacked, of interrogating her about where she is from, despite repeatedly telling her that she is from London.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the deal with Netflix six months after relocating to California.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle key appearances since stepping away from royal fold

When Queen Elizabeth II died, Prince Harry was on his way to Balmoral, and only found out about it three hours after Her Majesty had passed away. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were at the state funeral though, where Meghan was seen wiping a tear from her cheek in a touching moment.

Prince Harry made an appearance with his brother Prince William in July 2021 when a statue of their mother, Princess Diana, was unveiled. It was the first time the pair had been pictured together since Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021.

Meghan also appeared with Harry at a UN gathering in New York in July 2022, where the Duke spoke about humanity witnessing an assault on democracy and freedom around the world.
