MEGHAN Markle’s engagement interview was very different to Princess Diana and Kate Middleton’s for a number of reasons, a royal author has revealed.
Meghan and Harry announced their engagement news to the world in November 2017, after a whirlwind long-distance romance. The loved-up couple followed the royal tradition of giving an interview to mark the happy occasion. But Meghan’s moment was quite different to Diana and Kate’s engagement interviews, according to royal expert Andrew Morton.
The royal biographer described how Meghan was more confident than Harry with the media spotlight, marking a change from Diana and Kate who were shy and nervous.
Writing in Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Mr Morton said: “Meghan’s engagement interview was worlds away from the shy, blushing days of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles, and his comment ‘whatever love means’, which skewered his romantic reputation forever.
“Different, too, from the more formal and conventional affair when Prince William and Kate Middleton faced the cameras.
“Meghan was warm, affectionate and supportive, more at ease with the media than her royal fiancé.”
Diana and Charles announced their engagement in 1981, while Kate and William shared their happy news in 2010.
In her engagement interview with Harry, Meghan put on a confident display as the couple discussed their royal romance.
The pair – who have become known for their public displays of affection – clasped hands as they spoke about their plans to wed.
Meghan and Harry revealed the Prince proposed while the pair were having a cosy evening at Nottingham Cottage.
Meghan added that she could not let Harry finish proposing before she said yes.
Describing how their relationship started in July 2016, Meghan said they were “set up” by a mutual friend during a trip to London.
At the time, Meghan was based in Toronto, Canada, to film legal drama Suits.
Meghan said the couple made their relationship work by never going longer than two weeks without seeing each other despite both having busy schedules.
Meghan also discussed meeting Harry’s family, Suits and plans for the future as she sat alongside her fiancé.
Six months after their engagement interview, Harry and Meghan married at St George’s Chapel.
The couple are now expecting their first baby in spring 2019.
