LOOK OF LOVE: Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew ALL SMILES on pony trek with Beatrice
Exclusive: Just days before their daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding, the Duke and Duchess of York showed they are closer than ever by riding out together at Windsor Castle yesterday.
Andrew, Sarah Ferguson and their daughter Beatrice, 30, borrowed three of the Queen’s horses to spend a relaxing hour trotting around the royal estate as Princess Eugenie prepares to marry Jack Brooksbank on Friday.
Neither is a keen equestrian but the obvious affection between the royal odd couple will fuel long-standing rumours that they will one day remarry.
“Planning for the wedding has brought Andrew and Sarah closer together and made them realise how important their family is to them” a close friend said.
“They have loved being involved, making sure Eugenie and Jack have a great day and they have spent a lot of time in each other’s company.
“You can see the spark is still there between them – they share the same sense of humour, the same sense of fun and both adore their daughters and Jack.
“Andrew has never been good on a horse but he has been out riding a lot recently because he has taken over the post of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and needs to ride for ceremonial occasions.
“Sarah decided to join him and they looked like they loved every minute of it.
“Like any parents they are nervous and hope the big day goes well and this was the perfect way to unwind and relax for a short time.”
Tourists outside Windsor Castle could not believe their eyes yesterday as the pair rode into view.
Falklands War hero Andrew married Sarah Ferguson in 1986 on the rebound after splitting up with American actress Koo Stark.
The couple had two daughters Beatrice and Eugenie and “Fergie” became a global royal star alongside her sister-in-law Princess Diana.
But they separated in 1992 when Sarah became disillusioned with Andrew’s long periods away at sea in the Royal Navy, and she started an affair with Texan oilman Steve Wyatt.
She was then photographed having her toes sucked while on holiday with her American “financial adviser” John Bryan and in 1996, she and Andrew divorced.
Bizarrely they remained the “world’s happiest unmarried couple” for the sake of their children and after a decade, Sarah moved back into Andrew’s Windsor home Royal Lodge where the 58-year-olds still live today.
Although the Queen has always had a soft spot for Sarah and invites her to stay at Balmoral, Prince Philip has never forgiven her, once describing her as “odd and pointless” and refuses to be in her company.
For years there have been rumours they would remarry after Philip’s death.
In 2001, Sarah told a US magazine she and Andrew had discussed remarrying, but Philip would not allow it.
And in an interview with Tatler magazine the same year, Andrew posed with his ex-wife and daughters and said: “I don’t rule remarriage out.”
The friend added: “Sarah is not surprisingly nervous about meeting Prince Philip at the reception after the wedding as he’s expected to be there.
“She just hopes all the bitterness is forgotten for the day.”
When Sarah stayed at Balmoral for a few days in August to celebrate Beatrice’s 30th birthday, the Queen was guest of honour.
But Andrew’s ex-wife had to leave the castle a day before Philip arrived to join the Queen.
