Kate praised as ‘sensible and down-to-earth’ as ‘ostentatious’ Meghan Markle blasted

KATE, Duchess of Cambridge has been praised for her recent fashion choices, while Meghan Markle has been blasted for dressing in a way that is “totally inappropriate” for the situation she is in.

Last Sunday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked the green carpet at the inaugural Earthshot Prize awards ceremony. The event recognised five winners, who were each awarded £1million, for coming up with sustainable innovations.

Guests were asked by Prince William and Kate, both 39, to “consider the environment when choosing their outfit”, and the couple led by example with their own wardrobe choices.

While the future king re-wore a dark green velvet blazer he previously sported for a charity gala in 2019 along with 20-year-old trousers, Kate opted for a lilac Alexander McQueen gown dating from 2011.

Her ensemble has been praised by fashion PR and former etiquette consultant Charlotte Ellis, who claims the royal showed both “sensitivity” and “common sense”.

She told Express.co.uk: “Kate showed again her sensitivity and common sense when wearing the Alexander McQueen dress at the recent Earthshot Awards.

“She looked radiant in the recycled Grecian style gown that she first wore ten years ago.

“She knows well that a beautiful classical couture dress never dates and wearing a recycled gown was also in tune with the theme of sustainability of the event.”

The Duchess often wears pieces she has owned since before having three children, including a trip to University College London’s Centre for Longitudinal Studies on October 5 where she was seen sporting a £16 Zara dress that she’d previously showcased in Bradford last year.

Also for a visit to Kew Gardens with her husband earlier this month, Kate dusted off an emerald Erdem coat first worn in 2014, and her actions have been praised by the industry expert.

he commented that being seen re-wearing items is a feat that she claims helps Kate gain the respect of royal watchers.

Ms Ellis said: “There’s no doubt Kate wins hands down with her sensible, down-to-earth choice of outfits when on official visits.

“British Royal Family members are well known for wearing some of their trusted fashion pieces more than once and earn thereby the respect of the public.”

In contrast, the PR professional claims Meghan Markle’s choice of outfits can show a “lack of understanding” and can appear out of place for the occasion she is attending.

It comes after the Duchess was slated by critics over the cost of her high-end wardrobe during her trip to New York with Prince Harry last month.

During the couple’s time in the Big Apple, they visited a school in Harlem, one of the city’s more deprived areas.

Meghan’s £7,000 ($10,741) ensemble which was worn to meet students prompted scorn from some, including in an opinion piece for the NZ Herald journalist Daniela Elser.

Ms Ellis said: “On the other hand, Meghan Markle’s ostentatious choice of outfits is more suited to the Hollywood scene than to charity visits of schools and other places.

“Wearing eye-wateringly expensive clothes where most of the children are on free school meals is insensitive and totally inappropriate.”

She highlights that there is an obvious contrast between both of the Duchesses when it comes to their clothing choice and “striking the right note”.

Ms Ellis concluded: “Kate knows how to be glamorous when the occasion requires, such as the Bond premiere for example, without being ostentatious”.
