Kate and Prince William thwart bid to overshadow Boston trip as Waleses win over US

Kate, the Princess of Wales and Prince William’s visit to the United States was marred by the resignation of the Duke’s godmother over “racist” comments and the release of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s documentary trailer.

Kate, the Princess of Wales and Prince William last week embarked on a three-day visit to Boston in the run-up to the second edition of the Earthshot Prize awards. The Prince and Princess of Wales’s arrival was marred by Buckingham Palace announcing Lady Susan Hussey,  a Lady of the Household, had stepped down after she was accused of asking “racist” questions to a palace guest during an event. The release of the trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming Netflix documentary further threatened to overshadow the visit, but expert Kinsey Schofield noted William and Kate appeared to win over the US public despite the challenge.

The ToDiForDaily creator told GB News: “Everyone was so excited to see them.

“I saw the headlines saying, ‘oh, there’s a damper on this trip.’ Terrible headlines crushing this trip. William and Catherine stayed focussed, and they stayed kind.

“Catherine was visiting Harvard to learn the way science was improving children’s education.

“They had to pull her out the building because she was loving on everybody, taking photos.”

Ms Schofield added: “She’s just so personable, and everybody was so excited to see her.

“Multiple helicopters in the sky, people waiting to see them and get their photos. It was a really good, positive experience.”

Prince William took time during the visit to have his spokesperson condemn the comments made by Lady Susan Hussey to Sistah Space founder Ngozi Fulani, who said the Prince of Wales’s godmother repeatedly asked her “where are you from?” despite clarifying she was born and raised in the UK.

William’s representative said: “These comments were unacceptable, and it’s right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect.”

And attempts to further thwart the Prince and Princess of Wales’s visit to the United States with the release of Harry and Meghan’s documentary trailer also seemed to fail as royal fans insisted the couple should have “their moment” in the spotlight as they attended the award ceremony.

Speaking to BBC royal correspondent Danielle Ralph, a US royal supporter said: “Let everyone have their moment.

“Kate and William right now, the Prince and Princess of Wales, are having their moment here in Boston to make a change for the better.”

And one fan insisted “we all have to unite together,” in the wake of a racism row engulfing the Royal Family.

Royal commentator Richard Kay suggested the Waleses exploited their three-day visit as an opportunity to win over support in the aftermath of the shocking allegations Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made since stepping down in 2020.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex claimed an unnamed member of the Royal Family had asked questions about the skin colour of their son Archie ahead of his birth.

The Duchess also claimed they received no support from the Palace to hit back against negative coverage against them.

Mr Kay said the Palace was “keenly aware” their reputation had been marred in the United States, and William and Kate sought their Boston stay as a chance to start building back trust.

He said: “America has sided very much in the Harry and Meghan camp.

“This is so important to the House of Windsor to try and reclaim that love that existed in America for many years, largely because of the Queen, of course.

“But also because of the late Princess Diana, who was also a hugely popular figure.

“I think Americans are going to be slightly conflicted. They loved Diana, they love her sons, but one son is pitched against another.”
