MEGHAN Markle will lose her second close aide after she gives birth to her first child with Prince Harry. But why are Meghan’s staff quitting?
Meghan Markle has reportedly been given the unflattering nickname ‘Duchess Difficult’ due to how demanding she is. The reports have emerged as a second aide of Meghan has announced she is to leave her role after the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s child in Spring. The Australian has been part of the royal staff for 17 years.
Ms Cohen, who is nicknamed ‘Samantha the Panther’ in royal circles, was reportedly given the job after Harry and Meghan asked for her personally.
Meghan is said to have wanted to hire her permanently after she left her position at Buckingham Palace, but Ms Cohen refused.
She is also popular with the Queen, who made her a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 2016.
Ms Cohen was also the Queen’s assistant private secretary and press spokesperson.
She then worked with Meghan before her wedding and helped her transition into the royal fold.
But the mum-of-three is known in royal circles for taking no-prisoners and has a feisty attitude, which sparked speculation of a tense relationship with the Duchess.
Royal expert Victoria Arbiter told Inside Edition that she did not believe Ms Cohen’s departure has anything to do with a fallout.
She highlighted Ms Cohen was only part of Meghan’s staff on a temporary basis.
Ms Arbiter said: “It seems like suddenly in the last few weeks, this reputation is building of Meghan being difficult.
“It’s founded from absolutely nothing. It was said from day one that Samantha Cohen was only going to serve as the interim assistant to Harry and Meghan.
“She was never meant to stay any longer.”
A source close to Meghan said to the Sunday Times: “Sam will be a huge loss.
“Going forward, Meghan might need someone cut from a slightly different cloth to traditional courtiers, who is not a career civil servant or royal insider.”
Another of Meghan’s assistants, Melissa Toubati, also resigned six months after Meghan and Harry’s wedding at Windsor Castle in May.
A Palace source paid tribute to Ms Toubati for her help in organising Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding.
They said: “Melissa is a hugely talented person. She played a pivotal role in the success of the Royal Wedding and will be missed by everyone in the Royal Household.”
