How the Queen shares sweet title link with beloved granddaughters Beatrice and Eugenie

THE QUEEN is said to be very close to her two granddaughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. And poignantly the York sisters share a sweet link to their grandmother through their royal titles.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are both married now, so their royal titles have undergone some changes in recent years.

Beatrice is officially styled now as HRH Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, while Eugenie is HRH Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank.

But before the princesses married, Beatrice and Eugenie’s royal titles reflected the fact their father Andrew is the Duke of York.

So officially, Beatrice and Eugenie were styled as Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York.

How do Beatrice and Eugenie’s royal titles link to the Queen?

The Duke of York title has often been given to the monarch’s second son in recent decades.

The Queen’s father, King George VI, was the second son of King George V, and he was never intended to be King initially.

So when he married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the future Queen Mother, he was given the title of Duke of York by his father.

He held this title until he took the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his older brother, King Edward VIII.

This means that before George VI was crowned, his two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret were known as Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret of York.

So for the first 10 years of her life, the Queen actually shared the same royal titles as her future granddaughters Beatrice and Eugenie.

When her father was crowned, Princess Elizabeth became heiress presumptive to the throne, and later Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen’s affection for her two granddaughters has been obvious over the years, with the sisters frequently attending royal events with their grandmother.

The Queen’s love for Princess Beatrice was perhaps most evident at her wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi last year.

Like many brides, Beatrice and Edoardo’s May 2020 wedding was derailed due to the pandemic.

But the Royal Family pulled out all the stops for the couple’s rescheduled wedding in July.

However, for Beatrice, the Queen went a step further, lending her the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara she wore for her own wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.

The Queen also gifted Beatrice with a dress she famously wore in the 1960s that was designed by Sir Norman Hartnell.

Beatrice later tweeted that wearing her grandmother’s “beautiful dress” for her wedding day was an “honour”.
