yKATE, Duchess of Cambridge, may be choosing outfits similar to Princess Diana to channel not only her style but also her personality traits of kindness and charity, a fashion psychologist said.
Prince William’s wife is set to step into Princess Diana’s shoes and become the next Princess of Wales as soon as Prince Charles is crowned King. But Kate is already aligning her style with Diana’s, with some eagled-eye royal watchers claiming she has worn at least 19 outfits that were a clear homage to her mother-in-law’s style since she joined the Royal Family in 2011. Whether the Duchess of Cambridge is doing this on purpose or not cannot be confirmed but the likeness has been undeniable. These similarities with Diana help Kate boost her image among the public, according to Dawnn Karen, a fashion psychologist.
According to the expert, the more the duchess wears outfits similar to Diana, the most likely royal fans will be to perceive her as a new People’s Princess.
She said: “We will begin to perceive Kate in Princess Diana’s likeness, that she’s for the people, she’s caring.”
Arguing Kate herself has the reputation of a caring and genuine royal, Ms Karen added it’s not too much of a stretch for royal fans to draw similarities with Diana.
“The effect on the public of seeing Kate wearing outfits that remind us of Diana is that Princess Diana lives on through Kate Middleton, that she’s almost carrying on her legacy.”
Kate chose to dress similarly to Diana in key moments of her lives, including when she presented Prince George and Prince Louis to the world from the steps of the London’s Lindo Wing.
Just like the late Princess of Wales, the duchess wore a polka dots dress after the birth of her eldest son and a red outfit with a white collar for her youngest child.
Similarities in their outfits can also be found in other key moments of Diana and Kate’s lives.
The duchess wore a lovely pale blue dress with a matching headscarf in Kuala Lumpur, almost identical to the one donned by Princess Diana during her visit to Pakistan in 1996.
According to the founder of popular website What Kate Wore, Susan Kelley, these fashion choices are made by Kate to pay “respects” to Diana.
She said: “The duchess has a degree in art history.
“She pays attention to details and design.
“Using that background and looking to Diana for fashion inspiration makes perfect sense.
“For me, the linkage is that of an homage, a sign of respect or acknowledgement.”
According to fashion experts, Diana’s wardrobe mirrored her personality, and she used to make choices that would draw her closer to the public.
For instance, she would never wear gloves, to be able to touch people’s hands when she was shaking them.
Eleri Lynn, curator of a 2017 exhibition at Kensington Palace called “Diana: Her Fashion Story”, said: “Cheerful, colourful clothes because she wanted to convey approachability and warmth.
“She didn’t wear gloves because she liked to hold people’s hands.
“She would sometimes wear chunky jewellery so that children could play with it, and she never wore hats to children’s hospitals after a while, because she said you couldn’t cuddle a child in a hat.”
