On Monday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their royal engagement to the world. It was then, as they stepped out into the rose garden at Kensington Palace, that we all got our first glimpse at the stunning engagement ring.

As Harry explained in an interview with the BBC, he commissioned the ring himself to include two side diamonds with a center stone all in a yellow gold setting, which he said is Meghan’s favorite. The Stones

Meghan’s ring is known as a triad design, which includes two smaller side stones as well as a center stone Harry himself sourced from Botswana. Meanwhile, Kate’s ring is a 12-carat sapphire with smaller diamonds lining the center stone in a halo setting. Kate’s ring is also set in silver.

The Price

According to E! News, Kate’s ring is likely worth about $47,000 at face value, while Meghan’s comes in at about $66,750, according to David Allen of 77 Diamonds.

The Designers

Kate’s ring was designed by Garrard, an official royal jeweler, back in 1981. Harry designed Meghan’s ring and used Cleave and Company, Court Jewellers, and personal medalists to the Queen to bring it all to life.

The Significance

While the rings worn by Meghan and Kate are surely valuable based on the actual stones themselves, they are both truly priceless for sentimental reasons, as each of the rings had special significance to Princess Diana, Harry and William’s mother.

Kate’s ring was the engagement ring that Prince Charles gave Princess Diana.

“I thought it was quite nice because obviously she’s not going to be around to share any of the fun and excitement of it all,” William said as to why he chose his mother’s ring. “This was my way of keeping her sort of close to it all.”

Meanwhile, Meghan’s ring features two side stones that were each a part of Diana’s private collection of jewelry. “The little diamonds on either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” Harry told the BBC.

The center stone, like we said, was sourced from Botswana, a place that is meaningful for the couple. Harry spent time there as a child with his mother, while the pair both visited the African nation in celebration of Meghan’s 36th birthday earlier this year.

Of her new engagement ring Meghan told the BBC: “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Diana’s stones] and, obviously, not being able to meet his mom — it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us. It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which sort of links where [Harry comes] from and Botswana, which is important to us. It’s perfect.”
