PRINCE CHARLES has been heir apparent for almost seven decades, and as such, Charles has been a great support to the Queen throughout her reign. Here are five of the most memorable times Charles stepped up his royal role to help the Queen.

Prince Charles has carved out his own path as the Prince of Wales, with many of his patronages focused on environmental issues and the welfare of young people. But Charles has also been on hand to support the Queen in any way he can as heir to the throne and her eldest son. Express.co.uk looks back at five times Charles was a great support to his mother, the Queen.

Prince Charles and Queen at Buckingham Palace

Reception at Buckingham Palace, 2016

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were present to support the Queen at Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace in 2016. The annual evening reception for members of the Diplomatic Corps was also attended by Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

State Opening of Parliament, 2019

In previous years, the Queen was often accompanied to the State Opening of Parliament by her husband, Prince Philip. But in 2019, Prince Charles was seated next to the Queen at Westminster for the traditional ceremony.

Charles also escorted the Queen to the State Opening of Parliament in 2021. Also in attendance was Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and the pair sat in seats slightly away from the Queen for the ceremony.

Prince Charles COP26 speech

COP26, 2021

The Queen had to cancel her appearance at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow this November due to health reasons. But in her absence, Prince Charles led the royal contingent at the summit, which included Camilla, William and Kate. Charles also gave a speech during the opening ceremony.

Prince Charles speech in Barbados

Barbados’ Presidential Inauguration Ceremony, 2021

Prince Charles visited Barbados in the Queen’s place in November 2021, as the country marked its transition to a republic. Charles gave an impassioned speech during the event which saw Sandra Mason sworn in as Barbados’ president.
