The sweet story behind Kate Middleton’s engagement ring
When Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton in 2010, he presented her with an engagement ring that carried a lovely royal history.
The ring, featuring a 12 carat oval sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, had once belonged to the prince’s beloved mother, the late Princess Diana.
It’s said Prince Charles was partial to the ring because it was similar in design to an heirloom brooch his mother Queen Elizabeth II inherited from Queen Victoria.
However, this beautiful piece of jewellery has an even sweeter story behind it than anyone realised.
Following Princess Diana’s death in a Paris car accident in 1997, her two sons were reportedly permitted to choose one ‘keepsake’ each from her jewellery collection in Kensington Palace.
Prince William, then 15, selected his mother’s gold Cartier watch, while 12-year-old Prince Harry chose her engagement ring.
However, the two boys agreed that whoever proposed first would take the ring, according to the Daily Star.
Thirteen years later, Harry handed the ring to his big brother, who had been dating his university girlfriend Kate Middleton for several years.
William popped the question while the couple were on holiday in Kenya with some friends; at this point they’d been talking about marriage “for a while”.
The prince had been carrying his mother’s sapphire ring in his backpack for three weeks before he proposed, recalling he “literally would not let it go”.
“Everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew … if it disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble,” William said in a joint interview with UK Press Association following the engagement.
Speaking of the ring’s family history, the now father of three said it was a way to keep his mother’s memory alive.
“I thought it was quite nice because obviously she’s not going to be around to share any of the fun and excitement of it all; this was my way of keeping her sort of close to it all,” he said.
Kate clearly understood the significance, telling the interviewer, “I just hope I look after it. It’s very, very special.”
Now, with rumours swirling that Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle are soon to be engaged, there’s plenty of speculation as to what kind of ring the prince will propose with.
Some UK reports suggest the 33-year-old is having an emerald and platinum ring made for the Suits star, using a bracelet that belonged to Princess Diana.
