Ex-Glasgow guardsman who once guarded the Queen and Princess Diana says he throttled a duck to death beacuse it was in pain.
Robert Muir was given a suspended 12-week prison sentence for strangling the wild bird in front of horrified onlookers in a park in London.
Muir, who said he once guarded royalty as a member of the Scots Guards, claimed he killed the wild duck “for the right reasons”.
The 49-year-old said: “I grew up in the countryside, hunting and fishing, I know how to look after animals, I’m an animal lover.
“I did what I did because I had to, it wasn’t a pleasant thing to do, but it was suffering.
“I could see it was injured, it had a huge gash under its wing, it was going to die, but that wasn’t picked up in the CCTV.
“I did it for the right reasons, I’m not a bad person.
“I’m an ex-soldier, I was in the second battalion of the Scots Guards, I used to be in the household division guarding the Queen and Princes Diana.”
Muir, originally from Glasgow, left the army in 1998 and now lives in west London.
