But while Meghan was struggling to adapt to the difficulties of royal life, particularly the heavy scrutiny she faced while a member of the Firm, Doria remained supportive of her daughter – but didn’t add any pressure on to her life.
Meghan and Harry eventually decided to quit senior royal duties in 2020, and this year it was confirmed they would not be returning back to the fold.
According to an insider, Doria’s influence over Meghan will also become prominent in her son Archie’s upbringing, particularly now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex live near her in Los Angeles.
The source described Doria as a “spiritual and calm woman who is comfortable in her own skin”, which resonated with Meghan while she was growing up.

They said: “As she raised Meghan to stand strong in her beliefs, [Doria is] thrilled that Archie, too, will be able to grow up having the freedom to make his own decisions in life, which would not have been possible if Harry and Meghan had stayed in the Royal Family.
“She feels that it’s healthier for Archie to have a normal upbringing.”
The decision to move to the US reportedly “delighted” Doria, with the insider adding: “While Doria never put pressure on Meghan to leave the Royal Family, she’s over-the-moon to have Archie closer to home.
“She can’t wait to spend more time with her grandson and get to know him properly, once the pandemic is over.”
Doria Ragland with Prince Harry
Doria will no doubt also be pleased after the couple confirmed to Oprah that they were expecting a baby girl to join the Sussex family.
Bookies have predicted that the couple could honour Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, when choosing their girl’s name, with odds currently at four to one.
The name Alexandra is currently at the same odds, while the names Florence and Amelia are both at five to one.
Jessica O’Reilly from Ladbrokes said: “Fans of the couple are convinced both of their mothers will influence the baby’s moniker.”

The Sussexes were praised for their openness on how they felt regarding their new addition, when Oprah asked what was Harry’s first thought when he saw the ultrasound.
He said: “Amazing. Just grateful, just any — to have any child, any one or any two would have been amazing.
“But to have a boy and then a girl, you know, what more can you ask for?
“But now, you know, now we— we’ve got our family.

“We’ve got the four of us and our two dogs and it’s great.”
Harry himself is known to share a close bond with Doria, and reports last year claimed he even called his mother-in-law “mom”.
According to The Sun, another insider described Doria as “an absolute tower of strength” – “not just for Meghan but for Harry too”.

The source continued: “He obviously doesn’t have a mum whom he can turn to for advice but he has always been incredibly close to Doria and never more so than now.
“Harry has a huge amount of respect for her and for her judgement which is why he and Meghan have both spoken to her throughout about what they planned to do.”
They added: “She’s been the epitome of calmness throughout and both Meghan and Harry trust her and her judgement 100 percent.”
