Meghan Markle wedding dress: Designer reveals sketch inspired by Princess Diana
MEGHAN Markle’s wedding dress design will be inspired by Princess Diana when she marries Prince Harry in May, a bridal expert said as speculation mounts over the royal wedding gown.
Meghan’s wedding dress will likely be kept under wraps until the moment she steps from the car outside St George’s Chapel, however, bridal fashion experts already have revealed their predictions for the bid day.
Caroline Arthur, a British luxury wedding dress designer, believes that Meghan will most likely draw inspiration from Princess Diana when she walks down the aisle at St George’s Chapel in May.
A sketch by Ms Arthur shared with the Express.co.uk shows a sleek bridal gown inspired by Diana’s gorgeous bright blue silk dress by Versace which the late princess wore during her tour of Australia in 1996.
In Ms Arthur’s design Meghan’s one-shouldered fitted column gown features a “detachable glossy organza princess over-skirt with long train”.
Ms Arthur told the Express.co.uk: “A bit of an unusual choice, some might say, but I do think the similarities between Diana and Meghan are striking!
“Meghan’s admiration for the compassion that Diana showered on those around her, is well known, and her work in the 1990s will no doubt have inspired awareness of the desperate need for humanitarian aid, and possibly influenced her own decision to pick up where Diana left off.
“So perhaps, Meghan’s gown will be influenced more than anything, by that other extraordinarily strong and compassionate woman, beloved by Harry – his mother.”
Another reason Ms Arthur suggests that Meghan will take inspiration from Princess Diana in her wedding dress is because the pair are so alike in personality.
She said: “The most striking similarity for me is the fact that they both chose to make the best possible use of their Royal position and visibility for humanitarian purposes both here and abroad.
“True philanthropists, they just both happen to be breathtakingly beautiful, stylish women, who inspire us all to seek out opportunities to help those around us, and do so in our own way.”
Diana’s wedding dress before the big day was considered one of the most closely guarded secrets in fashion history.
Ms Arthur added: “Diana alighted from her carriage and we were all blown away by the astonishing creation by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.
“Diana’s wedding dress when she married Prince Charles in 1981, was a full-on fairytale of taffeta, ruffles and petticoats.
“It is easy with hindsight to mock a fashion choice, particularly when scrutinised by the entire world, and intensified by it being a wedding dress.

“But personally I still love the silk taffeta, the ruffles, the fantasy…and so what if it creased? Diana looked like the ultimate benevolent fairytale princess.
“And if I had to describe her style, I would do so in a remarkably similar way to that of Meghan’s style right now.
“They each seem to take simple, elegant pieces, and style them with a modern twist.”
