Danish royal shares Prince Harry’s delight in anonymity after move abroad – ‘More myself’

PRINCE NIKOLAI of Denmark is relishing a greater degree of anonymity while living abroad than the one he would enjoy in his home country – a situation very similar to the one Prince Harry enjoyed during his time in the military.

Speaking to Vogue Scandinavia, he said his classmates in France “don’t know and don’t care” about his title.

He continued: “It’s relaxing and soothing in a way. I can be even more myself.”

Nikolai’s appreciation for anonymity and the little focus on his royal title can remind of the Duke of Sussex, who famously asked to be called “just Harry” during the Travalyst summit in Edinburgh in February 2020.

The summit’s host, Ayesha Hazarika, said as he was introducing the Duke on stage: “He’s made it clear that we are all just to call him Harry.

“So, ladies and gentlemen, please give a big, warm, Scottish welcome to Harry.”

Prince Harry also found a higher degree of privacy compared to the UK after he relocated to Montecito with his wife Meghan Markle and firstborn Archie Harrison.

During a candid conversation with actor Dax Shepard in the podcast Armchair Expert, the Duke admitted his arrival to California in late March 2020 was characterised by intense media attention.

He said: “The helicopters, the drones, the paparazzi cutting the fence — it was madness.

“The people out here, their response was, ‘well, what do you expect if you live in L.A.?”

However, Harry pointed out he is entitled to his privacy even if he is a public figure.

He later said his family is now in a “way better” situation following the Sussexes’ relocation to Montecito, a star-studded village in Santa Barbara.

Prince Harry recently spoke about his decade in the Army as the “happiest time in my life” because the military career stripped him of his privilege, titles and attention he normally gets.

Appearing on the mental health docu-series he created with Oprah Winfrey The Me You Can’t See, the Duke said: “The happiest times in my life was the 10 years in the Army. Without question.

“Because I got to wear the same uniform as everybody else.

“I had to do all the same training as everybody else. I started from the bottom like everybody else.”

He added: “That was where I felt my most normal and actually within my younger years, the most comfortable I felt was out in Afghanistan, away from the media.”

In his recent interview, Prince Nikolai said he doesn’t pay too much attention to the frenzy surrounding himself or his family on social media.

But, he admitted, he does take a look if he stumbles upon news reports on the Danish Crown.

He said: “Sometimes when I do my grocery shopping I stumble upon a paper with me or my family in it, and I just read the front page.”
