Happy Birthday Queen Elizabeth! Britain’s longest-serving monarch is 92 TODAY
The Queen is celebrating her 92nd birthday today. Here Express.co.uk takes a look back at the life of the world’s oldest and longest-reigning current monarch.
Elizabeth II has long remained committed to her duty to the nation since she took to the throne in 1952.
But young Elizabeth was never meant to be monarch – she was born the daughter of the second son of King George V.
But her uncle Edward VIII’s abdication changed the course of history when he stepped down from the throne to marry the woman he loved, pushing his brother – Elizabeth’s father King George V – into the spotlight, which eventually led her to become the Queen.
And on her 21st birthday, Elizabeth II pledged to serve the country for her whole life.
Today, at the age of 92, the head of state stands as the the world’s oldest and longest-reigning living monarch, overtaking Queen Victoria in 2015.
Queen Elizabeth is the nation’s 40th monarch and her rule has seen 13 British Prime Ministers, starting with Winston Churchill in 1952.
She has also seen 13 US Presidents and seven Popes in office come and go through her lifetime.
When she became Queen at the age of 25, Stalin was still leader of the USSR and Truman President of the US.
