How childhood made Meghan Markle Prince Harry’s match as dad said: Live outside the box
MEGHAN Markle’s father who gave his blessing to Prince Harry over their relationship once inspired his actor daughter to “draw her own box”.
Thomas Markle, a caucasian Emmy award-winning TV lighting director, is the person who introduced Meghan to life on a film set.
While Meghan’s mother Doria Radlan, on the other hand, 60, is an African-American therapist, yoga teacher and social worker.
According to Meghan’s blog, her mother, who is African-American, would take her on holidays to remote and impoverished places – sparking the actor’s interest in philanthropy.
But it was her father who really influenced the girlfriend of Prince Harry and always inspired her to live outside the box.
Writing in a recent essay, Meghan revealed that when she was just 12-years-old she was forced to complete a mandatory census at school.
But the boxes to indicate ethnicity were only labelled white, black, Hispanic or Asian – which left her more than a little confused.
She wrote: “There I was, my curly hair, my freckled face, my pale skin, my mixed race, looking down at these boxes.
“You could only choose one, but that would be to choose one parent over the other – and one half of myself over the other.”
She went on: “I put down my pen. Not as an act of defiance, but rather a symptom of my confusion.
“When I went home that night, I told my dad what had happened.
“He said to me, ‘If that happens again, you draw your own box’.”

Meghan was born in Los Angeles in August 1981, spending most of her childhood living in ‘The Valley’ area.
But her parents divorced when she was six-years-old, so like boyfriend Prince Harry she knows what it is like to come from a broken home.
Thomas Markle met Prince Harry during one of his visits to Canada and is said to be “pretty happy” about their relationship.
Meghan’s half-brother Thomas Markle Jr said that their father knew about the relationship from the start and met Harry soon after.
“He first met Prince Harry about six months ago out in Toronto,” her brother told the Daily Mail website.
“He’s pretty happy about Harry and he’s extremely proud of her. They have an amazing relationship, they’re very close and they always have been.”
The pair are even rumoured to soon be engaged, after one unnamed source said Harry is keen to propose to his 35-year-old girlfriend before he turns 33 on September 15.
