The announcement has been made after Daily Star Online revealed it was due to be made before the weekend.
The much-anticipated news was confirmed by the Prince of Wales in a brief statement issued by Clarence House.
The Queen and Prince Philip “are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness”, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.
The statement read: “His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle.
“The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said of the engagement:

“His Royal Highness and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month.
“Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty the Queen and other close members of his family.
“Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents.
“The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.”

Daily Star Online revealed staff were summoned to Buckingham Palace for a “big meeting” on Friday morning before another one in the afternoon, when they were told of the engagement.
The Royal wedding will take place in 2018, after Harry and Meghan sounded out the Archbishop of Canterbury for a church wedding.
The pair, who have been dating for 17 months, have been tipped to announce an engagement for months since their romantic African getaway in August.
Daily Star Online revealed Meghan met the Queen at her Balmoral holiday home in Scotland after the trip, before being invited to a BBQ by Her Maj.
After making a good impression, the Queen gave Harry the much needed thumbs-up of approval to pop the question.
Engagement rumours then reached fever pitch when actress Meghan was spotted shopping in London on Tuesday after flying over to the UK last weekend.
It’s reported she quit Suits and has moved out of her Toronto flat, and is now moving in with her boyfriend at his Nottingham Cottage home in the grounds of Kensington Palace.
Betting for the pair getting wed were suspended by a leading bookies last Thursday, suggesting the announcement was imminent.
