Cheers as Sophie and Edward greet the crowds

THE Earl of Wessex told mourners the Queen would “appreciate this fantastic support” as he met well-wishers paying their respects outside Buckingham Palace yesterday.

A cheer erupted as Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, met members of the public standing behind barriers.

As the crowd said they were “sorry for your loss,” the Queen’s youngest son, 58, said: “I know that my mother would really appreciate this fantastic support.”

Sophie, 57, shook hands and cuddled children, including a baby.

Sophie in a short-sleeved black dress and Edward in black tie then walked across The Mall to meet those at barriers on the edge of the central London park.

The walkabout came as thousands queued up to see the sea of flowers left in the centre of the park.
