Royal dress code: From Kate Middleton to Prince William and the Queen, have you ever noticed these strange fashion rules royals always follow?

Catherine Duchess of Cambridge sticks to very strict rules when she’s out and about on royal business.

And while many of us would do anything to riffle through Kate Middleton’s wardrobe, we’re not sure we’d be able to follow these strict clothing guidelines at all times.
Even though she mixes things up by wearing anything from Jenny Packham to Zara, the Duchess of Cambridge is still tied down to a royal dress code.
But it not just fashion-centric K-Middy that has to abide to this, as the entire royal family have a what-not-to-wear guideline.

Here’s what you need to know about the royal wardrobe.

Whether it’s summer or winter, Prince George is always wearing shorts when he’s doing his royal duties, never trousers.
As it turns out, this is an old aristocratic and royal tradition. Like his father and uncle Prince Harry, he probably won’t be spotted in a pair of trousers until after his eight birthday.

Have you ever noticed that Queen Elizabeth II is nearly always wearing a pair of gloves?
She’s either rocking Michael Jackon-esque white gloves or a dark leather pair, depending on the rest of her attire.
The longest serving British monarch is required to wear them for practical reasons, as she’s expected to shake so many people’s hands at events.
Royals’ smart-casual rules

Even when she’s doing dressed down, George and Charlotte’s mum is still following guidelines.

Kate always looks modest, and usually opts for dark jeans, a classic long-sleeved stripped tee, flat shoes and minimal jewellery.
The men of the family are still required to dress relatively smart too, often going for a polo shirt with dark jeans.

The Queen’s block colours

The 91-year-old monarch always looks sassy in her strong colours.

She often wears one bright colour, from pinks and purples to greens and blues, from head to toe.
This is said to ensure to royal is the main attraction at every occasion. You can’t miss the Queenie in the number above, can you?

Royals who’ve served in the Armed Forces — Prince William is in the Royal Air Force and Prince Harry has served in the British Army — can wear their uniform at certain events.
Both Harry and William wore uniforms at the Kate and Wills wedding in 2011, as tradition expects of them, but Wills opted for the tunic of an Irish Guards officer rather than in his RAF uniform, as he also holds the honorary rank of Colonel of the Irish guards.
