Kate and William royal tour in Norway: Who is Crown Princess Mette-Marit?
KATE, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William touched down in Norway today as part of their Royal Scandinavian tour to meet Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. But who is Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway?
William and Kate’s private chartered plane landed at an Oslo airforce base this morning ahead of schedule after the royals were forced to leave Sweden early due to snow.
They were met by the Regal Norwegian couple who braved the wintry conditions to offer a warm welcome to their country.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are on a two-day tour of the country during which they will visit a Ski Museum and discuss mental health with students.
Prince William, the second-in-line to the throne, is a relative of Norway’s King Harald as both men descend from Queen Victoria.
Who is Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway?
Mette-Marit, 44, has been married to Norway’s heir apparent since August 25, 2001, acquiring the title of Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess of Norway after marriage.
The couple have two children together, 14-year-old daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Princes Sverre Magnus, 12.
The crown princess was a controversial choice when she and Prince Haakon became engaged in 2000, as she was a Norwegian commoner and single mum to son Marius, then age four.
At the time, the former waitress had a raucous past and was said to have attended drug-fuelled parties with her son’s father, a convicted cocaine dealer.
The prince’s romance caused many raised eyebrows and the then Miss Hoiby was forced to publicly apologise for her rebellious past just days before her royal wedding in an emotional press conference.
Speaking at the time, she said: ”My youth rebellion was much stronger than many others. That resulted in me living quite a wild life.”
Although she never admitted to taking drugs, she added: “I would like to take this opportunity to say that I condemn drugs.”
Who is Mette-Marit’s family?
Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby was born in Kristiansand August 19, 1973, the daughter of journalist sven o Hoiby and Marit Tjessem.
The future princess grew up in a two-parent household with one sister and two older brothers but her parents divorced when she was 11.
Her father would go on to later marry former stripper Renate Barsgård, a woman half his age.
Mette-Marit studied at a local secondary school and spent six months at an Australian high school as part of an exchange.
At the end of her education, she worked for the Norwegian-British Chamber of Commerce at Norway House, London, but it was after this that she fell into her hedonistic phase.
The prince and princess first met in the late 1990s when Mette-Marit attended Norway’s largest music festival, Quart Festival, but their courtship did not commence until a second meeting several years later.
Since becoming a member of the Norwegian Royal Family, Mette-Marit has campaigned on humanitarian issues and obtained a master’s degree in Executive Management.
Her son Marius, who can never become king, announced his retirement from public life last year at the age of 20 after opting to move to the USA to study.
