Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s first affair with Prince Charles was merely a “fling” while she waited for the man she was “really in love with”, a royal biographer has claimed. Vanity Fair contributing editor and historian Sally Bedell Smith joined the Royally Obsessed podcast to dissect the future king and consort’s early relationship. She spoke about the royal couple’s different stages before and throughout each other’s disastrous marriages to other people.

Ms Bedell Smith told listeners: “Their first affair was in 1972, and they were introduced by a friend of Charles who was a neighbour of Camilla.
“She invited them to have a drink together.
“So all these things about them meeting in a polo match are not true, they met there.
“He was quite smitten with her, but she was really in love with Andrew Parker Bowles.”
Camilla used Charles for ‘fling’, but ‘smitten’ Prince took relationship ‘more seriously’ .
Ms Bedell Smith said: ‘He was quite smitten with her, but she was really in love with Andrew.’
She continued: “She wanted to marry him, she’d been with him for like six years.
“But Andrew Parker Bowles was away for six months in Cyprus with his regiment.
“So she had six months to kind of have this fling with Charles and he took it much more seriously.
“Although he wasn’t prepared to get married.”
Ms Bedell Smith said: ‘She got married the following July, and they were in touch.’
The royal historian added: “She got married the following July, and they were in touch.
“He was one of four godfathers of her first child, Tom.
“When her marriage started to fall apart in the late 70s, he and Camilla had their second affair.”
CAMILLA AND CHARLES TIMELINE
Ms Bedell Smith said: “That did, by the account of everybody I spoke to, ended when he married Diana.
“Now were they occasionally in touch by phone because he was the godfather to her son? Probably.
“But I think that you have to Prince Charles at his word what he said to Jonathan Dimbleby in his famous documentary in 1994.
“He admitted adultery with Camilla, but he said they resumed in 1986, after his marriage had irretrievably broken down.
“By that time, Diana had already had one affair with her protection officer, and later on in 1986, James Hewitt.”
