Camilla issued ‘trademark’ reaction to Diana’s Panorama interview despite vile abuse

CAMILLA issued a “trademark” reaction after Princess Diana’s infamous interview with BBC Panorama’s Martin Bashir.

Mr Bashir has apologised for his actions, but still maintains that it did not harm Diana or affect her decision to give him the interview.

Another victim of the infamous interview was Camilla Parker Bowles.

The now Duchess of Cornwall dated Prince Charles in the Seventies but both then married other people ‒ the heir to the throne marrying Diana and Camilla marrying Andrew Parker Bowles.

In 1994, Charles famously admitted he’d been having an extramarital affair with Camilla since 1986.

Diana, in conversation with Mr Bashir in 1995, then rubbed salt in the wound by saying: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

The royal went on to say knowledge of their romance had a “pretty devastating effect” and exacerbated her eating disorder.

Camilla, who has never spoken publicly about the affair, was widely villainised after these astonishing revelations.

Yet, she took a stoic approach towards the widely unfriendly attitude from the public.

She continued: “This is a woman who has endured without a whisper an avalanche of public insults after Prince Charles told millions about their affair on television.

“This is a woman who once encountered a journalist breaking into her downstairs loo; and who had the contents of a family album, taken without her consent, splashed all over a newspaper.

“There was a photograph of her in a bikini and another of the Prince of Wales with Camilla’s baby son Tom and the Prince’s godchild, in his arms.”

Ms Braid explained: “With so little from the horse’s mouth, the question of whether she is weeping her way through this weekend — a lonely, washed-up middle-aged woman who forfeited marriage and social standing for love — is largely speculation.”

Nigel Evans, then editor of Majesty magazine, also told The Independent that Camilla’s attitude could save the monarchy.

Camilla later transformed her public image through Prince Charles’ advisers.

She made her first public appearance as Charles’ partner in 1999 when leaving The Ritz in London.

She married the Prince of Wales in 2005 but was careful to take the title of the Duchess of Cornwall out of respect for Diana.

Given Lord Dyson’s findings, BBC bosses are now bracing themselves for backlash over their rehiring Mr Bashir in 2016.

When he was appointed religious affairs correspondent in 2016, the corporation’s head of newsgathering Jonathan Munro said he was attracted to the reporter’s “track record in enterprising journalism” and respect within the industry.

‘The Diana Interview: The Truth Behind the Scandal’ airs tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm.
