Princess Diana’s death was ‘a gift and a curse’ for Camilla admits former Royal butler

Princess Diana’s death was both “a gift and a curse” for Camilla Parker-Bowles, former Royal butler Paul Burrell has claimed.

Princess Diana’s former butler said Camilla benefited from the death as she was finally able to marry Prince Charles but suffered as she will be “forever associated” with the tragedy.

Speaking ahead of the 20th anniversary of the People’s Princess’ death, Mr Burrell also claimed Camilla would never have married Charles if Diana had lived as the public would never have allowed it.

He said: “The conundrum is that Charles could never have married Camilla if Diana had survived because, as the heir to the throne, he could not remarry with an existing wife.

“When the accident happened it opened the gate for Camilla to marry Charles and she got what she wanted. In her death Diana gave them a gift. But I think it’s also a curse because her death will forever be associated with Prince Charles and Camilla – and they have to live with that.”

He painted a tragic image of Diana during her doomed marriage, especially when it came to her wedding day itself.

Mr Burrell said: “The princess above everything was a romantic. She fell in love with her prince – and that was her downfall.

“She told me there’s a point when she’s walking down the aisle wondering ‘Is she here?’ And there she was.

It comes ahead of the anniversary of Diana’s death on Thursday – something believed to be causing great anguish to Charles and Camilla.

A torrent of stories about the death of Princess Diana and the reasons behind the failure of her marriage has left him in a gloomy, introspective mood, insiders say.

Those in his close circle of friends have been writing and calling the couple empathising with the “extremely difficult” situation on the 20th anniversary of the Paris car crash.

Now Prince Charles has admitted the pain he is feeling by expressing his thanks in private to those close to him who are helping to lift his spirits.

A source close to the couple said: “It is fair to say Prince Charles is feeling pretty raw and emotional with a lot of the pain from the past being dredged up again.

“It is good that the virtues and good works of Princess Diana are being remembered but, unfortunately, there has been relentless focus on the heartache of decades ago as well.

“Prince Charles has made it clear that he is very grateful for the support from his loyal friends during this time.”
