Britons can’t forgive Camilla for betraying Diana Almost worse – because Camilla is a mere adjunct to the royal story

It’s time to forgive Camilla over Charles affair, says RICHARD & JUDY

R WE Brits simply won’t be told what to think. Recently there has been a surge of positive, well-honed online and newspaper PR about the Duchess of Cornwall.

It was all quite obviously timed to deflect sour memories of Camilla’s affair with Prince Charles, as we recall Diana’s horrible death 20 years on, and the Princess’s candid comments a few years earlier about “three people” in her “crowded” marriage.

The campaign hasn’t worked. A poll this week showed that two thirds of Britons still don’t want Camilla to be Queen.

They can’t forgive her for betraying Diana. Almost worse – because Camilla is a mere adjunct to the royal story – another, separate poll revealed that most of us want the throne to skip a generation and for William to leapfrog over his father and become King when Queen Elizabeth dies.

It’s interesting how lives and destinies can be for ever defined by a handful of short but telling sentences.

Diana’s: “Crowded marriage.”

Charles’s: “Whatever ‘in love’ means…” and “I refuse to be the only Prince of Wales never to have a mistress.”

Camilla’s threat to photographers at a foxhunt: “If you’re not careful I’ll hit you with my bull-whip.”

Personally I think Camilla and Charles have done more than enough to be accepted as a fully-fledged couple and make amends for the fractured past. People say the wrong things.

Make mistakes. Have affairs. Lie, cheat and divorce. Charles and Camilla have worked hard to redeem themselves and find acceptance as a happily married couple.

I believe he’d make a good King and her a good Queen. But vox populi – the voice of the people – thinks differently.

They have, seemingly irrevocably, decided the couple behaved badly and that Diana died partly as an indirect result.

They won’t forgive or forget. And as for those damning polls? Clarence House has declined to comment. Never complain, never explain.
