Brave Princess Eugenie used wedding to highlight cause close to heart ‘So touching!’

PRINCESS Eugenie has been praised for using her wedding day to Jack Brooksbank as a way to highlight an important cause close to her heart.

Princess Eugenie was diagnosed as a child with severe scoliosis—a curvature of her spine—and underwent surgery to correct it at age 12. On her wedding day in October 2018, the royal opted for a wedding dress that showed her scar, saying she hoped it would honour those who had helped her and inspire others with the condition of scoliosis to feel beautiful. On international Scoliosis Awareness Day, she posted to her Instagram saying: “I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.”

She said: “Her dress of course, that low back, it was so touching I thought with her scoliosis scar that she wanted to showcase that.

“I actually have scoliosis too so that was really nice for me to see her as such a global figure out there showing young girls.

“It sucks, you have to wear a back brace or have surgery, I didn’t have surgery so I don’t have a scar but I just thought that was really nice for her to do.”

The hosts added: “Right, and not cover it up.”

“And bring awareness to scoliosis, and not covering it up.”

“I think that’s one of the things the royals are so good it, is being unattainable and crafting this perfect image.”

“To see her really embracing that we all have scars and imperfections and showcasing them for the world to see.”

Eugenie was named as the new royal patron of the Scoliosis Association UK in October 2020.

Stephanie Clark, co-founder and chair of SAUK announced: “I am absolutely delighted and grateful that Princess Eugenie is to be our Royal Patron.”

“Her bravery and experience makes this a very personal decision, and will continue to offer encouragement to the many people of all ages who are struggling to come to terms with their scoliosis.”

Princess Eugenie is the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
