As Kate Middleton’s due date nears, gamblers see 3 girls names as top possibilities for next royal baby
With the due date for Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s third baby only a few weeks away, bookies are reportedly raking in bets on when the newest royal baby will be born — and whether the newborn will be a boy. While odds on gender are even according to U.K. bookmaker William Hill, Prince William fueled speculation last week after he reportedly suggested that the baby be named after star Aston Villa player Jack Grealish.
“I’m going to insist the baby is called Jack … or Jackie,” the Prince declared, according to The Mirror.
Speculators, however, think it’s unlikely that the Duchess will allow her child to be named after a soccer player, and the best odds can actually be found for a girl’s name. William Hill had odds for Mary, Alice, and Victoria at 3:1, 6:1, and 8:1 odds respectively, while the most popular choices for a boy’s name — Albert, Arthur, and Fred — all weighed in at 12:1 odds. Mary has proved a popular name choice for the royal family historically — it is Queen Elizabeth’s middle name, as well as the name of her grandmother. Another possibility, which is considered an outside chance by most bettors, is that the royal couple might name a girl after Prince William’s beloved late mother, Princess Diana.
