Becoming a king at some point in the future is something that most people only experience in their dreams. However, for Prince William, it is a reality.
Born to Prince Charles and Princess Diana, William is currently second in line to the British throne and will become king after his father. Knowing for your entire life that you will someday be the ruling monarch of the United Kingdom certainly comes with its fair share of pressure. After all, just about everything Prince William does is closely watched, and the entire world is very critical of both him and his wife, Kate Middleton.
For the past few years, they have had very little privacy, with billions of people tuning in to watch them get married on live television, and millions more watching as they welcomed their three adorable children into the world.
At one point in his life, it didn’t seem that William was focused on being king. So, why did the Duke of Cambridge change his mind about becoming the ruling monarch?
Although the world was interested in what William did, and there was also an intense interest in Kate, they were not in the royal spotlight as much as they are now.

At the young age of 15, Prince William tragically lost his mother, Princess Diana.
The loss affected him greatly, as he was very close to his mom and her death was sudden. Diana was known for spreading compassion and love all over the world. Often called the “people’s princess,” royal fans loved Diana from the time she married Prince Charles and long after their divorce. She was one of the most beloved royals of all time, and she made quite an impact on everyone she interacted with.
It may be that William feels that he must continue his mother’s legacy by serving the people of England and worldwide.
William was able to be carefree
As a young adult, William was able to live a carefree life. Even as a future king, he had close friends while away at college in Scotland, which is where he and Kate met.
It is only natural that when he was younger, William wasn’t thinking much about the fact that he would one day be the king of England. After all, it seemed so far in the future, and he was more intent on enjoying his freedom.
He is now a dad
Becoming a parent changes everything, even for royal family members. William takes his responsibilities much more seriously now that he is the father of three children.
He knows that he must set a good example for Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and especially for Prince George, who will one day be a king himself. Most likely, William wants to appear as responsible and dedicated as possible in the eyes of his kids. William is very much aware of the legacy he wants to leave.
William now has a different focus
Now that his life is different, William is focused on becoming king and carrying out his royal duties to the best of his ability. At some point after his marriage to Kate, it seemed that he was ready to fully embrace his royal duties and do whatever he could to prepare for his important future role.
It would appear that William is doing everything he can to make Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and of course, Princess Diana, as proud as possible.
