PRINCESS DIANA never had the chance to meet Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle – but one expert believes she would have been very interested in her daughter-in-law’s familial relationships.
The Duchess of Sussex has recently spoken out in an ITV documentary about her struggle behind the scenes dealing with public and press scrutiny. However, there is another story that is surely causing her heartache that the documentary did not focus on – and that is her relationship with her father Thomas Markle. Meghan was close to her father when she was young but recently they have become estranged, with Thomas telling various media outlets that his daughter is not talking to him.
Ingrid Seward, author and editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, told the Daily Mail in July: “[Diana] would have been fascinated by the dynamics between Thomas Markle and his daughter.
“She would have wanted to know all the details of their relationship and why it went wrong.”
This could be partly because Diana was very close to her sons when they were young and would want to make sure this relationship did not deteriorate as it clearly did for Meghan and her father.
There is also a good chance that Diana would have related to Meghan’s struggle, as she had a difficult relationship with her own mother, Frances Shand Kydd.

In fact, their situations are not so different as both Meghan and Diana’s parents divorced when they were young girls.
Diana’s mother split from her father John Spencer when she was seven years old – and her father won custody.
According to astrologer Debbie Frank, who Diana confided in in matters of the heart, Diana “had a lot of early pain from her mother leaving her as a child,’’ giving her abandonment issues that were only compounded by Prince Charles’ behaviour during their marriage.
At the time of her death in 1997, Diana was not even speaking to her mother, after Frances had said it was a good thing she lost her HRH status.

Meghan, meanwhile, has a good relationship with her mother Doria Ragland, who was the only family member to attend her wedding in May 2018 and to meet baby Archie – but her father has claimed she “ghosted” him.
Thomas and Doria separated when Meghan was a toddler and divorced five years later.
At first, she lived with her mother during the week and the weekend with her father, but later lived with Thomas full time.
According to 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’, Thomas doted on Meghan, his youngest child.

As a Hollywood lighting director, he would help in all the school productions she was in at her Catholic girls’ school Immaculate Heart.
Meghan’s brother, who is over a decade older than her, recalled how his father was after Meghan was born.
He said: “He spent every minute he could with [Meghan].
“My dad was more in love with her than anyone else in the world and that included Doria.
“She became his whole life, his little princess. He was just blown away by Meghan.”
However, in more recent years their relationship has become strained, with Thomas admitting to staging paparazzi photos of himself ahead of the Royal Wedding in May 2018.
After suffering a heart-attack and undergoing surgery days before the big day, he was unable to attend the wedding and communication since then has gone downhill.

Ms Seward might believe that Diana would have been interested in this, but former press secretary to Charles and Diana, Dickie Arbiter, disagreed.
He said: “I don’t think Diana would have interfered in the problems Meghans been having with her father.
“She would have seen that as between father and daughter.”
