When they were there, the phone rang with Camilla on the other end.
According to Diana, Camilla wanted her own fond farewell with Charles.
Rather than staying to listen to the conversation, Diana said she felt obliged to leave the room.
She said ten years later, that the moment “just broke my heart”.

Anthony Holden, the author of the Prince Charles biography, ‘Charles: A biography’, described the moment in his book.
He wrote: “She was weeping because her last minutes alone with the prince at the Palace had been interrupted by a phone call.
“It was Camilla, wanting her own fond farewell.
“So tender was the conversation that Diana had felt obliged to leave.

“That moment, she said ten years later, ‘just broke my heart’.
“Left alone in the vast emptiness of Buckingham Palace, she went into a spiral of decline from which she was never really to recover throughout the fifteen years of marriage ahead.”
Once the marriage was over, she revealed what she really wanted.
She said: “I missed my girls so much I wanted to go back there and sit and giggle like we used to, and borrow clothes and chat about silly things, just being safe in my shell again.”
