Kate Middleton’s uncle arrested on suspicion of ‘assaulting wife in the street’
The uncle of the Duchess of Cambridge, Gary Goldsmith, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife after a night out at in London.
Mr Goldsmith, a businessman estimated to be worth £30million, is the younger brother of Carole Middleton and attended the weddings of both Kate and Pippa.
He hit his wife Julie-Ann in the early hours of Friday morning outside the couple’s central London home after she accused him of doing c*caine, a taxi driver has claimed.
Taxi driver Daniel Shepherd claimed he witnessed the incident after driving the couple to their flat in flat in central London following a night at a private members’ club.
He has claimed that Mr Goldsmith “turned and hit her with a left hook” and that “she fell and cr*cked her head on the pavement”.
Mr Shepherd said: “They seemed to have had a good drink and she was upset with him and saying, ‘I haven’t seen my husband for a week and you go and leave me to do c*caine with your business buddies’.
“She said, ‘Do you think I’m stupid’? He started yelling at her and saying, ‘You’re a dirty w****’.
“He was being rude to me as well and boasting of spending £100 a day on cabs. I pulled up at their home, she got out and he paid the fare.
“She was trying to open the door of the house so he went over. That’s when it kicked off.
“She slapped him before he appeared to punch her. I jumped out of the cab and said, ‘You can’t do that’.
“She started crying and said, ‘Call the police, call the police.’ I did. The police came. He got arrested. They wanted lots of details. I had to give reports.
“It ended in total mayhem. I have restrained a member of the royal family. Two hundred years ago I’d have been beheaded for that.”
He said that at the time he had no idea who the couple were, adding: “I only knew that after.
“They (the police) said, ‘That’s the uncle.’”
Mr Goldsmith’s wife, who was reportedly hit in the eye, was taken to hospital by ambulance and treated for her injuries before being discharged.
The Metropolitan Police have said: “Police in Westminster were called to an address at 01:24 hours on Friday 13 October following reports of a domestic incident.
“Officers arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of domestic assault. He has been taken to a central London police station for questioning. A woman found injured was taken to hospital.”
Mr Goldsmith was bailed and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on October 31.
