Today host Karl Stefanovic has lashed out at the former butler of Princess Diana after he made explosive remarks about the Duchess of Cambridge.
Paul Burrell tried to backtrack on his comments just one day after saying Kate Middleton will never measure up to her mother-in-law’s legacy.
Appearing on Channel Nine in a heated interview on Wednesday morning, a defiant Stefanovic pressed Mr Burrell over his controversial views that Kate doesn’t have the ‘X-factor’ or the ‘magic quality’ the late royal had.
‘You said she lacks the X factor that Diana had. That is way too harsh, isn’t it?’ Stefanovic grilled Mr Burrell in an on-air stoush.
‘I don’t even know where you came from, she doesn’t the X factor of Mother Teresa, the Queen, Diana… Why would you even say that?’
‘She is a mother of two doing the very best she can. She is awesome. Everyone wants to see what she is doing and she doesn’t put a foot wrong. How dare you even say that.’
As tensions boiled over, Mr Burrell – who worked for the royal family from the age of 18 as a footman – apologised for his comments, insisting it was ‘taken out of context’.
‘What I was trying to say was Diana was unique and irreplaceable and she had that something, which is charisma or magic. I’m not quite sure what it is,’ he responded.
‘Kate is a beautiful young lady. She is gorgeous, she has never put a foot wrong. She has the love and support of her husband and they are the future of the royal family.
‘I think we should support them and maybe my comment was out of kilter. I didn’t mean it that way. What I meant was she is a safe pair of hands.
‘Diana was much bigger, much more. Kate wouldn’t want to be Diana. She wouldn’t want to try to fill her shoes. That is an impossible ask.’
Mr Burrell explained that after ‘standing beside’ the Princess for a decade, he had a different take on Kate.
‘Well, because you see, standing beside someone like Diana I saw something so special and so magical that I can’t… I have never seen that,’ he continued.
‘[Kate] is doing her job well. She is doing everything that she is asked to do and she is going to be our Queen one day. She has my support in that.
‘But what I want to say is Diana had something more. She had that extra something more. She had that extra – I don’t know… magic.’
Stefanovic hit back, asking: ‘How often have you stood beside Kate?’, to which he responded: ‘I don’t know Kate. I just see her the way you see her, through a lens.’
Mr Burrell went on to describe Kate as a ‘beautiful young lady’ who is ‘going to be Queen of our country one day and I will be applauding when she is’.
Unimpressed with Mr Butler’s response, Stefanovic told the ex-butler to ‘leave’ Kate alone before taking another swipe at him.
‘Do you have some sort of oxygen deprivation at the moment? I mean, come on. Leave her alone,’ Stefanovic continued.
‘If William is king one day and I found out you had said that about Kate I wouldn’t be letting you back into the country.’
Co-host Lisa Wilkinson intervened the dispute in an attempt to hose down the tensions between the pair, before Mr Burrell pleaded with Stefanovic to ‘let it go’.
Following the heated interview, Stefanovic jokingly said to Mr Burrell: ‘I would invite you over for a barbecue but I have pictures of William, Kate and Harry everywhere all over my house and I don’t think you would like it.’
The on-air dispute comes just one day after Mr Burrell told 9News that Kate will never live up to Princess Diana because she doesn’t have the ‘magic quality’.
‘I met Mother Teresa, she had it, Pope John Paul II had it, the Queen has it, Diana certainly had it, Kate doesn’t,’ Mr Burrell said on Tuesday.
‘She’s a lovely, lovely girl and if you get to meet Kate you will know she totally adores her husband and they’re devoted to each other.
‘But that extra something which you call the X factor, the magic quality, charisma…it’s not there.’
