Author Andrew Morton says that Diana had a “deep sense of duty and obligation” to the public which “impelled her to keep up appearances”. He believes that royal fans put a heavy strain on Diana, but the Princess of Wales wanted to support them and the family’s image. Mr Morton made the comments in his royal book ‘Diana: Her True Story’.
He said: “A close friend says: ‘The public side of her was very different from the private side.
“‘They wanted a fairy princess to come and touch them and turn everything into gold.
“‘All their worries would be forgotten.
“Little did they realise that the individual was crucifying herself inside’.”

During her time as a member of the Royal Family, Diana became one of the most recognisable and popular faces in the world.
On the specific day Diana separated from Charles, one royal expert has spoken of the touching question Diana uttered to Charles.
Writing in her book, ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’, Ingrid Seward spoke of the moment the pair met for the first time following their separation.
The two met in Kensington Palace in the first-floor drawing room Diana called the salon of her apartment.
