The Queen told Diana she ought to divorce Charles says butler in stunning claim

PRINCESS DIANA was told she should divorce Charles, Prince of Wales in a letter from Queen Elizabeth II, it has been alleged.

She kept her apparent at Kensington Palace and Charles agreed to share custody of their sons, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex with her.

“She never wanted a divorce, but just a separation.

“Princess Diana showed me a letter one day which was sent by the Queen.”

He explained: “It was very obvious to make out that was from the Queen.

“It was in the Queen’s hand and her writing was shocking.

“It said: ‘I have consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury also with the prime minister and, of course, with Charles, and we have decided that the best course for you is divorce’”.

At the time, the Prime Minster was John Major and the Archbishop of Canterbury was Lord Carey.

Diana had said in her interview she had a “deep, profound sadness” from the separation with Charles in 1992.

She is said to have told Mr Burrell after reading the letter: “That’s rich! They get to decide whether I divorce!”

The divorce went through on August 28 1996.

Diana was given £17million and £350,000 a year to maintain her private office.

She would tragically die a little over a year later following a car crash in Paris, which also took the life of Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul.

Charles would remarry in 2005 to Camilla.

The year 1996 also saw the divorce of Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson.

Four years previously, Anne, Princess Royal divorced Mark Phillips and married Timothy Laurence.

Anne’s son Peter Phillips, the Queen’s eldest grandchild, has recently announced he is set to divorce his wife Autumn.

The couple announced they had split in 2019.

They have two children, Savannah, the Queen’s eldest great grandchild, and Isla.

Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex is the only of the Queen’s children not to divorce.

Edward married Sophie, the Countess of Wessex in 1999.

Last week, the Queen marked 68 years on the throne.
