The royal opted to give up her luxury sports car as she didn’t want to be seen driving it in the early 90s and a time “of economic hardship for many British people”. Writing in ‘Diana: Her True Story in her Own Words’, author Andrew Morton claims security officials for the family also advised about giving the Mercedes sports vehicle up. He wrote: “Diana surprised the royal household when she decided to give up the Mercedes sports car which she fought so long and hard to get.
“She felt ill-at-ease driving such an ostentatious car during a time of economic hardship for many British people.
“On a practical level, the distinctive sports car was something of a security headache.
“It was easily spotted by the paparazzi photographers who make their living following her around.
“As her bodyguards pointed out, if cameramen know where she is, so do those who could wish to do her hard.”

The revelation comes after Petronella Wyatt, a contributor for the Daily Mail, claimed Diana and then-husband Prince Charles had a major falling out over a set of car keys.
She revealed that the argument was sparked over Charles’ need to move his car from the drive in Highgrove.
She said that Charles Churchill, a distant cousin of Diana’s, told one of her friends that the Queen had been planning to visit them on that day.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Ms Wyatt wrote: “The whole house was turned upside down looking for them. Everybody was asked. Diana swore she hadn’t seen them.
“The staff all said the same thing.
“Then came the moment when the Queen’s car was just arriving.
“Diana leaned out of a top window and shouted ‘there are your lousy f**king keys’ and threw them out onto the drive.”
