SORRY Meghan Markle won’t wear THIS On her wedding day
We admit it. Call it royal wedding mania, but with May 19th on the approach, we’ve been guilty of speculating on even the tiniest details of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s impending nuptials, from the guest list to the bridesmaids to the cake and, of course, the dress, the veil and just about every other part of Meghan’s bridal ensemble.
As a royal bride, it’s a given that Meghan will wear a tiara to walk down the aisle, making this yet another rich field for educated guesswork and outright speculation. With the Royal Family’s extensive jewellery archive available for perusal, she has plenty of headwear to choose from, but one piece from the Queen’s collection can already be ruled out – the Cartier Halo tiara.
Also known as the Scroll tiara, the piece in question is steeped in royal history. Crafted from diamonds and platinum in 1936 by the world-famous jewellery brand, it was given to the then-Duchess of York by her husband, before the pair became better known as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. It was then given to the Princess Elizabeth to mark her 18th birthday, who later loaned it to her sister, Princess Margaret, and only daughter, Princess Anne, when they were younger.
Most famously, though, the Halo tiara was borrowed by the Duchess of Cambridge to wear on her wedding day in 2011, elegantly complimenting her traditional veil and Alexander McQueen gown. While it would be a dazzling option for any royal bride, Meghan won’t be able to follow the lead of her future sister-in-law – because the tiara in question will be in Australia at the time of her wedding.
As Town and Country have pointed out, the Halo tiara will appear in Cartier: The Exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, which is set to run from 30th March until 22nd July this year. Other storied exhibitions will include the diamond engagement ring worn by Grace Kelly, and a diamond necklace owned by Elizabeth Taylor.
While this particular tiara may be out of the question, Meghan certainly isn’t short of options. Indeed, it’s been rumoured that she’ll choose to wear the iconic Spencer tiara, most famously worn by Princess Diana on her wedding day.
