Sophie Wessex wanted ‘bigger role’ in Royal Family but was ‘overshadowed by senior royals’

SOPHIE, COUNTESS OF WESSEX has always wanted to play a “bigger role” in the Royal Family, according to one royal expert.

Sophie Wessex is the wife of the Queen and Prince Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. The couple has two children together, Lady Louise Windsor and James Viscount Severn. Sophie has long been hailed as one of the hardest working members of the Royal Family, often sticking to less glamorous projects. The Countess is also known to be one of the Queen’s favourite members of the family due to her quiet and reserved manner.

However, in recent months Sophie has seen a shift in her royal duties as she has been forced to be at the forefront of the Royal Family.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s departure from the family on March 31 has seen the remaining senior royals step up in their duties and engagements.

In addition, Prince Andrew’s disastrous interview with BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis regarding his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein has also seen him step back from royal working life, leaving even more work for the Countess and Earl to pick up.

But according to royal expert Phil Dampier, Sophie has not always been happy in the background.

Mr Dampier said: “In the absence of Prince Harry and Prince Andrew, Sophie Countess of Wessex has been stepping up to the plate and making a much bigger contribution on the royal scene.”

Where she was once relegated to the back burner, Sophie has now become an essential part of the Royal Family’s new look.

Mr Dampier added: “I think Sophie was always willing to take a bigger role, but she was overshadowed by more senior royals. But now her time has come.”

Mr Dampier also noted Sophie is loved by royal onlookers and members of the family, even overshadowing Prince Edward at times.

He added: “She is a rising star and now much bigger than her husband Prince Edward.

“He looks after their children, Louise is 17 and James is 13, when she’s away and seems very family orientated.”

Sophie being catapulted to front and centre of the Royal Family seemed unlikely a few years ago as she and Prince Edward were outranked by a number of senior royals.

However, a very unique set of circumstances within the family has seen all of that change recently.

Mr Dampier added: “The Queen and Prince Philip are in their 90s, Charles, Camilla and Anne in their 70s, Andrew is in disgrace and Harry has departed.

“The Queen and Philip have 1,500 patronages between them, so who will fill the gap?

“There is a massive place for her, despite Prince Charles wanting a slimmed-down monarchy.”

Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex were recently spotted in attendance at a Christmas Day church service in Sandringham.

The couple were joined by their children at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Queen’s beloved Norfolk estate.

Mr Dampier says Lady Louise could be the next rising royal star if she’s to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

He said: “Their daughter Lady Louise is growing up fast and I’m told is highly intelligent.

“She could turn out to be a star in her own right and will get a lot of inspiration from her mum.”
