Sarah Ferguson news: When did Duchess marry Prince Andrew? Are they reuniting?
Sarah Ferguson called her ex-husband “family” in her latest Instagram post. But when did the Duchess marry Prince Andrew and are they reuniting?
Sarah Ferguson posted a sweet snap of her, Andrew and daughter Beatrice laughing together at Ascot.
The 59-year-old captioned the photo “Great day with my family”.
The snap did not feature her other daughter Princess Eugenie, but it still sparked a response on social media as royal fans debated whether this was a hint at a reunion between the former couple.
When did the Duchess marry Prince Andrew?
Sarah Ferguson has known Prince Andrew since childhood.
They occasionally met at polo matches and became re-acquainted with each other at Royal Ascot in 1985.
The pair announced their engagement on March 19, 1986 and it was revealed Prince Andrew, who was fourth in line to the throne at the time, had designed the engagement ring himself.
The ring was made up of 10 diamonds surrounding a Burmese ruby, which he chose to compliment her hair.
She was initially deemed a positive addition to the Royal Family due to her fun spirit and friendly approach.
Andrew and Sarah married at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986.
The pair were the given the titles Duke and Duchess of York.
Their first daughter Beatrice Elizabeth Mary was born on August 8, 1988.
Eugenie Victoria Helena was then born on March 23, 1990.
However, there seemed to be trouble in paradise by 1991.
The Duchess was often seen in the company of other men, including Texan multimillionaire Steve Wyatt, while Prince Andrew was away on naval duty.
The Duke and Duchess of York announced their separation on March 19, 1992, which meant Sarah would no longer carry out public engagements on behalf of the Queen.
Four years later, they announced their mutual decision to divorce in May 1996.
Are they reuniting?
Sarah lived with her former husband in the family’s home, Sunninghill Park, in Berkshire, until 2004.
Andrew then moved to the refurbished Royal Lodge, in Windsor Great Park, and Sarah rented the neighbouring Dolphin House.
However, a fire in 2008 resulted in her moving in to Royal Lodge with her ex-husband.
She was invited to stay at Balmoral Castle with Andrew and their daughters in August 2013, as guests of the Queen.
The following month she responded to a question about whether she wold remarry Andrew with: “He’s still my handsome prince, he will always be my handsome prince.”
The pair are free to remarry if they wish to rekindle their relationship, as Andrew is now seventh place in line of succession following the birth of Kate and William’s third child, Prince Louis.
This means he is able to marry whoever he chooses without the consent of the Queen.
