Lady Diana Spencer and the Prince of Wales were wed on Wednesday, July 29, 1981. Their marriage was billed around the world as a true “fairytale wedding” and the “wedding of the century”. But for Diana her idyllic wedding dream would soon become a nightmare.

As the entire world watched on, an estimated global audience of 750 million people were in awe of the 19-year-old virgin Diana.

The late Princess’ brother Charles Edward Spencer later divulged his sister had been “incredibly dignified” throughout the lavish affair.

And now a Netflix documentary, The Story of Diana, has revealed what was really going through the young bride’s head as she walked up the aisle to greet her prince.

According to the film, in a heartbreaking confession, Diana said: “As I walked up the aisle I was looking for her.”

The woman Diana was referring to was the then-mistress of Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

In archive footage of the grandiose St Paul’s Cathedral event Diana’s eyes can be seen scanning the huge religious building in distressing scenes as she desperately searches for Camilla in the onlooking crowd.

Andrew Morton, Princess Diana’s official biographer, also shed light on Diana’s feelings before she got married saying she was “hopeful” Charles’ relationship with Camilla would come to an end.

He said: “When I interviewed Diana for her biography, she told me about the moment she stood at the entrance of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Diana: Expert reveals PRANKS she pulled on Princess Michael

“She said she had hope brimming in her heart and as she walked down the aisle as she looked at Camilla Parker Bowles – who she knew was Prince Charles’ mistress.

“She hoped the relationship was over, sadly it wasn’t.”

Royal fashion historian James Sherwood added that, in her huge Emanuel wedding dress, Diana appeared as a “sacrificial lamb”.

He said: “I remember the fairytale wedding dress designed by Emanuel.

“I feel like she looked like a sacrificial lamb in a way, all dressed up in this great big wedding cake of a dress.”
