Royal wedding: How Zara Tindall marriage broke with royal tradition

ZARA TINDALL has been married to Mike Tindall for over eight years. But how did their wedding break with royal tradition?

Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall married in 2011, shortly after the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Although around the same time, the pair’s wedding ceremonies could not have been more different.

Royal wedding fever has once again swept the nation after the announcement was made by Buckingham Palace that Princess Beatrice will be marrying her beau, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, in 2020.

Notoriously, royal weddings are elaborate affairs.

The wedding dress of Princess Diana in 1981 featured a 25ft long train, while the wedding of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, was watched by millions of people around the world.

While royal weddings over the last few decades have taken place in the grounds of Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle or St Paul’s Cathedral, one royal pair chose not to follow suit.

The wedding of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall was a far cry from some of the more high-profile royal weddings of the past.

The pair had a much more low-key wedding at the Canongate Kirk on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Arguably, as the future King, the wedding of Prince William could not be as low-key as his cousin Zara’s.

Nevertheless, the differences were stark.

And it’s not only the choice of venue which set Zara’s wedding apart from the rest.

The wedding attracted a much smaller crowd than other royal weddings, with some 6,000 people thought to have gathered outside the kirk.

The Telegraph reported at the time that Zara’s wedding dress was “off-the-peg”, chosen from the White Room boutique in Gloucestershire.

And in attendance, rather than inviting hundreds of important politicians to the event, Zara and Mike hosted a modest 400 guests on their big day.

Members of the Royal Family were still in attendance, including the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

But while the Queen vowed to “obey” Prince Philip on her wedding day in 1947, Zara vowed to “honour” her husband instead.

At the time of the wedding, Mike was training for his next international match at Twickenham.

Zara was also preparing for international horse trials.

Given their work commitments, the pair also decided to forego the traditional post-wedding honeymoon.

The wedding of Zara and Mike Tindall was certainly a much more relaxed affair than other royal weddings.

Since their wedding in 2011, Mike and Zara have since welcomed two daughters, Lena and Mia.
