Royal Wedding: How Prince Andrew broke the rules with his wedding speech
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank tied the knot in St George’s Chapel on Friday as the world watched. Here is how her father broke all the rules in his speech at the more private reception.
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank were married in a romantic ceremony in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
The whole Royal Family was there to watch the nuptials, which were broadcast on TV.
Even 97-year-old Prince Philip made a rare appearance to see his granddaughter say her vows.
After the ceremony, the couple headed to a lunchtime reception hosted by the Queen in the couple’s honour.
During the reception, the Duke of York gave a memorable speech about the couple, with topics ranging from childhood memories to current events.
But it was his anecdote about Jack which had the crowd laughing.
Prince Andrew shared with guests the moment when Jack mistakenly obeyed orders intended for the family dog, also named Jack.
A guest said: “The Duke of York told a wonderful joke in his speech.
“He recalled that his dog Jack was sitting on a chair and he shouted, ‘Jack, get off!’
“The dog didn’t move, he said, but Jack Brooksbank shot up and fled.”
Prince Andrew, during the wedding breakfast, “broke York House rules” to share a heartfelt moment with his future son-in-law.
Jack Brookbank’s old headmaster, Anthony Wallersteiner, said: “It was the high point for everyone.
“The Duke said, ‘I’m going to break York House rules now’, and he went over and gave Jack a big hug.
“It was in front of everyone, even the Queen. It was a huge moment, a human moment.”
After the lunchtime reception and emotional speeches, select guests headed to Royal Lodge for the evening reception.
The celebrations got into full swing with Pol Roger champagne and Casamigos Tequila provided by the groom, a drinks merchant.
And allegedly Robbie Williams got the party started with a spontaneous royal knees-up performance of some of his greatest hits.
Other A-listers at the party included Naomi Campbell, Liv Tyler, Demi Moore, Robbie Williams, Ellie Goulding, James Blunt and Kate Moss.
Despite the strict social media ban, images from inside Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall capture the moments guests arrive at the reception, travel to the party and having a welcome drink.
One image shows the couple gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes.
Shortly after, the groom made a speech in which he called his new wife “utterly stunning.”
Mr Wallersteiner said: “The first thing he said was that his bride looked utterly stunning.
“He talked about how she lights up his life and makes him feel complete.
“There was a real sense that he absolutely means it. It was so touching.”
